SHORT FORM FICTION

We’re Serious …

LESSONS IN LOVE (PART 5)

Photo by Zulmaury Saavedra on Unsplash

‘We’re serious,’ my friend tells me, about her relationship.

‘I see. Serious … People say that. But what does it mean?’

‘Oh,’ she says. ‘You know. We’re committed.’

‘To what?’

She frowns. ‘To each other, of course. We’re exclusive now.’

‘So you were seeing other people?’

‘No, not me, but it could have happened.’

‘Was he happy to share you?’

‘He said he was fine. That I could see other people. And so could he.’

‘You were happy to share him?’

‘No. I didn’t want an open relationship.’

‘But you just said it was.’

‘Well, sometimes it’s something you have to say. Not to appear desperate or clingy.’

‘There should be a referendum on that. How do you know that he still isn’t … seeing other people?’

My friend rolls her eyes. ‘You never truly know. There has to be trust.’

I thought for a moment.

‘Do you love him?’

‘Of course. We’re serious.’
