Jay M E is a freelance writer, editor, and private tutor. In his article ‘Writerly Instincts’, he invites us to explore the ‘origins of the impulse’ and the nature (or nurture) of what drives a writer’s obsession with … well, writing!
Our favourite quote from ‘Writerly Instincts’
When the time came for a new writing assignment in my English class, I added some of the poetic language I had been playing with, giving it figurative nuances and broken grammatical rules for impact (something I learned from my readings). Not only did the teacher give me a perfect grade, but he wrote the words, this is a keeper, an excellent and honest paper. It was the first time I had enjoyed a written homework assignment, and the first time I had received an A on an essay. The subject, as I recall, was the growth of cities, but it could have been about anything.

Susi Moore is a published author, former English teacher and Creative Writing instructor. She owns and runs both MuserScribe and The Scriber’s Nook.
In her piece, ‘The Muse Behind the Story’, she explores the inspiration behind Levana’s Wish (a fictional short story) including the mystical wishing tree rituals of a Summer Solstice.
Our favourite quote from ‘The Muse Behind the Story’
I became fascinated by a photograph showing long, colourful ribbons (‘clotties’ or ‘clooties’) trailing from a tree. Were they there just for decoration or was there more to it? After a little investigation, I found that wishing tree rituals are commonly held in May or June, particularly in parts of Ireland and Cornwall, where believers inscribe wishes onto ribbons and ask for blessings from nature, saints, or goddesses.
