Writing — Publishing

Welcome to In Living Color

Home to photo stories from all walks of life

One of my greatest loves has always been photography. Expression through imagery can be a powerful thing — interesting and thought-provoking, lighthearted and fun and everything in between.

A image can be pretty straight forward — a bright bunch of beautiful flowers, for instance, or a nice beach… or MnMs in an ice cream cup. Or it can be more artistic. I’ve always loved playing around with perspective, framing, lighting, as well as photo editing.

Photography has the power to do many things: inform, educate, persuade, convince, convict, communicate and simply entertain. And to tell you the truth, I love it all!

The purpose of In Living Color

In Living Color is a place for stories told through a combination of words and photos. There are many ways to write a photo story and plenty of themes and subject matter to choose from.

There exists many great photo storytellers here on Medium, and hopefully more will join us as we go along.

After publishing this recent article, “Thinking of Starting a New Photo Publication”, the response I received was so lovely and heart-warming. So, I wanted to create a post dedicated just to them in order to showcase their work, and also provide examples and inspiration for future photo story tellers:

The name In Living Color

Yes, I did 100% borrow the name from one of my favorite TV shows of the 90s, In Living Color. Always loved the title and so I included it in my brainstorming list. I was really favoring it but also kicking around other names. Deciding isn’t easy — gotta be something that can be lived with for the duration, ya know?

Then, the other day I said enough was enough. I had to choose. Literally, a few minutes later I was checking out a post from GE McKerrihan.

There it was in the subtitle! Do I believe in signs? Yes I do.

Well anyway, that just seemed to cement my decision on the name. As much as I loved the name Photostoria, as a lot of other people did, it ended up losing out to In Living Color.

What In Living Color means to me?

For me, the name encompasses the whole world and everything in it — all it’s beauty, imperfections and everything else that makes up this glorious place we call Earth!
