Weekly Wisdom from Karen
ILLUMINATION’S MIRROR Edition
Many of us are branching out from Medium. We’ve cut our teeth first alone, and then in various publications including the ILLUMINATION family of pubs.
Success is difficult to find. So if one opportunity fails to give us what we need, we look for new and better ones.
This week’s wisdom comes from writers who identified business heroes and possibilities then wrote articles about how others achieved or can achieve success.
An early entrepreneur living on his wits and credit, Staf Bauer gives us the low down on high tops without ruining the book for those of us who haven’t read it! Fortune favours the brave.
I have just finished the book Shoe Dog about the story of Phil Knight who founded NIKE together with his former coach Bill Bowerman. He takes you on his journey that begins by going to Japan and pretending to have a business.
Lily Colman-Goff gives us eight side hustles to consider. A boost to my bank account is always welcome.
Medium not so much but News Break has come through for me and I’m going full-time writer in March.
It’s worth putting in the effort to achieve a boost to both your pocket and confidence! I highly recommend Lily’s choices.
In 2021, there are so many opportunities out there for us to diversify our income streams — it’s very much the dawn of the side hustle! The age of the internet and social media has arrived and in the wake up of such an uncertain year in 2020, I think that it is now the perfect time to have a serious look at what is out there beyond our day jobs.
If you are looking for ideas on what to invest in this year Richelle Délia, PhD has some top tips. I have to agree with her that going green — evergreen — is sound advice.
I used my evergreen stories from Medium and published them with a few tweaks, updates, and changes on News Break. Going evergreen pays.
Focusing on these 6 actions will set your investing portfolio up for success no matter what 2021 throws our way.
KPIs, I remember those. So glad they play no part in my life free of top-down executives!
However, anything that makes goal setting easier is interesting to me. Wendy Scott seized my eyeballs and I settled down with a couple of big choc macaroons and a mug of coffee to read.
Wendy shares her wisdom on SMART for people who’d like to succeed in business. This acronym works for writers and executives.
It’s that time again. The goal setting for 2021 is raising its ugly head. You’ve barely had time to share your holiday pics on your phone and find out why Donna from Finance was let go, and your manager is talking KPI’s.
The title of this last selection for this week is what captured my eye. The author, Damon Ferrara, writes an eye-opening comparison of Disney+ and Netflix. His wisdom on the matter is rather interesting.
Quite honestly, I’m not a fan of early mornings nor do I have to watch any Disney offerings any more because my son is a grown man.
That said, I did watch Frozen and sobbed my heart out with gusto. Even so, I wouldn’t ever get up to watch an episode of anything at 3 AM!
Disney knows what they are doing where scheduling is concerned.
Netflix values the individual experience. Their films and series wash up fully formed on your account, often with little fanfare over their specific release. Any day can be opening day to any particular user. The Top 10 list halfway down your page is one of the few acknowledgements that you’re not their only consumer.
Did this week’s review inspire you to consider your goals, scheduling, investments, side-hustles, and entrepreneurial skills?
Star Read
If you need more convincing, my star read this week is a cross-pollination written by Dr Mehmet Yildiz who very thoughtfully listed all of the amazing Terry L. Cooper’s articles on every possible opportunity to make yourself some passive income from writing.
Thank you for reading.
