Weekly Wisdom from Karen

ILLUMINATION Edition

Welcome eager readers! You know the wisdom isn’t from me don’t you? The wisdom is from the skilful writers. It is serendipity that drew their stories to me. Now you get to share them too.

This first piece is fiction. I adore fiction. This is some of the best short fiction I’ve read. I was compelled to read all the way to the end. I highly recommend reading the comments from other fiction writers praising this exciting new writer, Buse Umur.

The cave was smoky, cold, and eerie. Suddenly, the disgusting smell dominated the air. I felt all my organs getting closer to my mouth. I wanted to vomit, get rid of everything taking space in my body.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and goosebumps erupted all up my arms when I read Zishanul H. Hussain.

We were on a boat crossing the Hooghly river when my cousin Imran told us about the Djinn who resided on the first floor of our local mosque.

Shreya Deodhar captures something we see around us and are so often guilty of doing ourselves. Her account of an elevator journey and the resulting realisation is skilful and wise.

It was a beautiful morning, but Sam didn’t notice.

Like every morning, scrolling through his Instagram feed, he pressed the button for the elevator. His office was on the sixth floor of the Grand Park Tower. Music blared into his ears, drowning out the city noise. Coffee in one hand and his phone in the other, he would enter the elevator.

Emma Tuftin wrote a magical tale. Pennies from heaven, perhaps. A curmudgeonly old man receives some surprises. The illustrations are wonderful.

The only company he kept was his own, and it wasn’t very good company at all. Even if he had friends and there wasn’t a worldwide pandemic going on, the old man doubted anyone would visit him. So he talked to himself.

He knew them as well as was necessary at this point. The play opened in two months and rehearsal wouldn’t start for another four weeks. He would go over his lines every other day until he returned to New York, to keep them fresh in his mind. It was a good part and he was looking forward to getting into it. It was so much easier than being himself.

So all the pieces turned out to be fiction! I believe ILLUMINATION is the best place to share your fiction pieces.

Here’s a bonus post from Drama Llama. I particularly enjoyed their countdown phrases. Intriguing.

Survival is the final offer that arrives at the eleventh hour… just when the pain to the tenth power would kill you with another ninth degree… By then, relief strikes you brief as an eighth note… you wear doom proudly… it’s your seventh seal. But life whispers through your sixth sense of what might await you in some fifth dimension… where the miracle is saved for the fourth quarter….. Tricked… you sigh and rise on the third day…

Have a great week.
