Summary

The website content discusses a creative writing prompt involving the use of non-existent words generated by the AI at thisworddoesnotexist.com, challenging writers to incorporate these words into stories and provide screenshots of the definitions.

Abstract

The article introduces a weekly writing challenge that encourages participants to craft stories using newly created words from an AI website, thisworddoesnotexist.com. This site not only generates non-existent words but also provides fabricated definitions based on etymological cues. Writers are prompted to use these AI-generated words and are required to include a screenshot of the word's definition at the end of their story. The prompt is presented with enthusiasm, suggesting that it will lead to imaginative and entertaining narratives. The article also reflects on the limitations of AI in understanding context, as demonstrated by the AI's definitions of the author's own invented words, "Centina" and "Pentina," which differ from their intended meanings.

Opinions

  • The author expresses excitement about the potential for creative storytelling that the AI-generated words offer.
  • There is a hint of skepticism regarding AI's current capabilities, as shown by the example of AI-generated definitions for "Centina" and "Pentina."
  • The author acknowledges the fun and innovative aspect of using AI to create words and definitions, but also recognizes that AI has room for improvement in truly understanding human language and context.
  • The requirement for participants to provide screenshots of the AI-generated definitions indicates a playful approach to the challenge, with a nod to the phrase "Pics or it didn't happen."
  • The article implies that while AI can assist in the creative process, human oversight and imagination are crucial in crafting meaningful stories.

Weekly Prompt: This Word Does Not Exist

Until now…

“Oh, this is going to be fun! We are going to get some neat stories out of this prompt… I can feel it,” I say.

“How?” you ask.

“With the help of artificial intelligence.”

“AI? Again? I thought we already did that.”

“We did — with faces. But this is better. This site creates words that do not exist.”

You roll your eyes. “We already had a president who made up words that didn’t exist.”

“This is different,” I say. “This site even lets you type your own words, and then it will create the definition for you, based on suspected etymology.”

“That’s incredible!” you say with a gasp.

“I know! I hope this conversation whets your appetite for storyhatchery.

“Wait,” you say. “Storyhatchery is not a word.”

“Are you sure?” I say. “I found a definition online.”

“What website is that?”

Thisworddoesnotexist.com.”

“I knew it! I told you storyhatchery isn’t a real word.”

“Maybe it is a real word, but it has to do with hatching stories; not killing birds.”

“That’s not real.”

“How can you be so sure?” I challenge.

“Type in a real word. That site will tell you if it exists.”

“Okay. I guess you’re right,” I confess. “That is a weird definition of word.”

“AI obviously still has a long way to go,” you say.

For this week’s prompt, your challenge is to write a story that contains a non-existent word. But we can’t just go around making up fake words without any rules. That would be utter chaos.

The first rule is, you must use www.thisworddoesnotexist.com.

The second rule is, you must take a screenshot of your made up word and put it at the bottom of your story. Use SHIFT + COMMAND + 4 on a Mac, or Windows + Shift + S on a PC. You know what they say… ‘Pics or it didn’t happen.’

Here’s a good place to note that if you want to make up your own word, this artificially intelligent site will let you type your made-up word in, then it will conjure up a non-existent meaning.

This prompt is near and dear to my heart because “Centina” and “Pentina” are made up words (although I didn’t use artificial intelligence to make them). Out of sheer curiosity, I entered them into thisworddoesnotexist.com to see what definitions it would create, but it reinforced the fact that this form of artificial intelligence still has a long way to go.

Everyone knows pentinas are green, not red.
Everyone also knows that centinas are thick, not thin.
