Weekly Prompt: A Tale from the Crypt

This week, anything goes

Welcome to the fourth weekly challenge for October, where the theme is Oh, The Horror!

As we said in the Monthly Theme announcement, the goal is to get you to write a truly terrifying horror story. The best of which we want to collect in our first themed anthology.

Boils and ghouls,

Gather round the time has come.

Gone are the campfire stories told in the dark. We’ve had our thumps and bumps under our beds. You gave us the horror of betraying friendly faces.

Now it’s time for a little treat. To dress it up however you like. To end our time with sugar and fright.

As crypt keeper, I’m here to set you free. Tell any manner of tale that brings you glee.

This week, anything goes.

No tricks, mind. Just a good, honest horrifying tale. Whatever that might be.

I grew up with the crypt keeper cackling way past bedtime and into the night. I’d see his intro and hear his jokes, then be sent off to bed by my worried folks. I’d stand in the door seeing a silver of screen, holding my breathe until the harlot did scream.

The air of mystery, the surprise treats, the looming frights made Tales from the Crypt a nightly delight.

So tell your tale any way you like. But if you’re inclined bring back the crypt keeper and his old rotten ways. Introduce your story before the first scene plays.

Good fright to you all, and have a…

Happy Halloween!

Challenge Requirements

Your story must:

  1. There’re no musts this week. Tell us any scary tale you want.
  2. Be min 100 and max 1000 words long, excluding the title, subtitle, and any post-story bio / links. (We use Medium’s own word count feature.)
  3. Be fictional, even if it includes factual information or concerns.
  4. Use “Cryptkeeper” as one of your five tags.
  5. Be sure to read Microcosm’s formatting guide on how to layout your story, especially regarding titles, subtitles, and images.

Until the next time boils and ghouls pleasant screams - Crypt Keeper

If this prompt stirred your words, consider supporting Microcosm and our writers by becoming a Medium member or directly by joining our Founder’s Club.

These prompt ideas, barring the twist on this one, came from our Lord of Halloween Paul Mansfield. So please direct all tricks or treats in his direction. 🎃
A Teresa Grabs' tweet inspired the twist for this one, because they're such a fan of Tales from the Crypt.
