We Can Enjoy a Better Day When We Clear the Fog in Our Brains

Honestly, I woke up with a feeling of dread.

I felt as if I slept. The keyword is felt. Obviously, I had my good 8 hours of sleep. I have no recollections of rolling around and scrolling my phone mindlessly for content.

Yet, I feel that the sun rays piercing through the blinds into the bedroom haven’t penetrated my head, into my brain.

I feel like a zombie. I am awake and asleep at the same time. It took me forever to drag my left leg off the bed.

It seems that I am besieged by brain fog.

And then, I got curious. What should I do to lift it away, like how valleys lift their fogs above them?

Curiosity is one of the great secrets to happiness.

I agree, although a greater secret to happiness, in my opinion, is our ability to solve problems when we encounter them.

What is Brain Fog?

We experience morning brain fog from time to time. We know it exists. We know it feels real, and when left alone, brain fog can rob our day of productivity and enjoyment.

Science does not debate the existence of brain fog. However, multiple studies point to brain fog as a symptom, not a condition. Dr. Rick Henriksen, M.D., M.P.P. is a board-certified family physician, has this to say about brain fog: -

Brain fog may not be a medical condition but its symptoms can prevent you from concentrating, recalling memories, and can lead to mental fatigue… Brain fog is the inability to have a sharp memory or to lack a sharp focus. You just really feel like you’re not yourself and you’re unable to think clearly.

As it turns out, the fog surrounded our grey matter continues to feed on itself until they are sucked out from our heads.

Clearing the fog in our brain is like building a healthy body. It is up to us to make that effort.

What can we do to lift the Brain Fog?

First off, brain fog is a result of our lifestyle choices.

It can occur with multiple sclerosis, during pregnancy, and as a result of lifestyle factors, such as stress, lack of sleep, or an unhealthful diet. Brain fog can be frustrating and confusing, but there are ways to cope when it happens.

This is the simplest explanation I can find online. Brain fog results from our lifestyle factors, and we can deal with it when it happens.

The very same online article went on to enumerate the possible lifestyle factors that cause brain fog: -

Brain fog can result from lifestyle factors such as:

Being too busy to rest and relax.

- Stress.

- Lack of sleep.

- Dietary factors.

- A sedentary lifestyle.

Lifestyle changes can sometimes help a person overcome these problems.

Honestly, these aren’t cutting-edge solutions to our daily problems. They are evergreen principles that guide us to live a good, healthy, and meaningful life.

And for some reason, they are useful in helping us navigate life complexities.

What worked for me this morning

I wanted to start work when I got up. At least, that was the plan before I knocked out last night. Plans go off the window when brain fog decides to knock on the door of my brain.

And so, I decided to head out for a morning swim. As much as I would like to be an elite athlete, I am just another exercise junkie. I almost always feel good after a workout, no matter how painful it is.

I jumped in and slapped my hands into the water clumsily. I counted my strokes, stared at the Big Blue T at the bottom of the pool, occasionally sipping chlorinated water along the way.

1 lap, 2 laps, 5, 10, 20.

I was breathless at the end when I removed my swim goggles. For some reason, I felt so much better, and I could think again.

Summary

I am glad that brain fog is not a medical condition. That means we can do something about it without visiting the doctor.

And this points us to another evergreen lesson in life. Our lifestyle matters. A healthier life leads us to become healthier being mentally, psychologically, and physically.

There is really no harm in exercising in the morning.

We feel good, and it lifts the fog surrounding our brains. We can think again.
