We Are Here to Answer Your Call
A kyrielle poem

When you thought you wanted to die But then rest the gun on your thigh And stop drinking the alcohol We are here to answer your call
When your car slides into a tree Because you could no longer see While you’re driving in a snow squall We are here to answer your call
When you’re having fun at the bar And the night’s going great so far But then some people start to brawl We are here to answer your call
When your footing doesn’t suffice You end up slipping on some ice And you hurt yourself from the fall We are here to answer your call
When you have an emergency That’s of the utmost urgency There’s no problem too big or small We are here to answer your call
Thank you again, Carolyn Hastings, for introducing another new-to-me form of poetry, the kyrielle.
I wanted to try the kyrielle, and I hope I did it right. I started with the line that repeats to come up with a theme to use. Even though I haven’t wanted to include my 9–1–1 job in my writing, I decided to go with it.
