Do you ever get to a point where everything you’ve read cites this one seminal paper but it’s paywalled and you can’t access it? Don’t give up just yet. I have 3 tricks up my sleeve to help you get the access to knowledge that you deserve.

  1. Unpaywall. This chrome extension locates the pdfs legally from university and government servers uploaded by the authors themselves with permission from publishers.
  2. Google the authors’ websites. Many researchers upload pdfs of their own pieces in a list of publications. Datasets, supplementary materials, code can similarly be found this way.
  3. Reach out and network. Whether it’s through i) something structured like researchgate or the good old-fashioned emailed OR crowdsourcing by tweeting big academia themed accounts like @academicchatter @openacademics @phdvoice, use this chance to reach out to other researchers and ask directly for their pieces!

Lucy (The Eggcademic) [she/her] tweets life hacks, poetry and whatever floats around in her steaming brain noodle.
