Watching The News For 3 minutes is Enough to Make Anyone Depressed

I’m going back to when I was a kid and skipping straight to the sports pages

War, Covid, Tsunami’s & Executions. And that was only this week.

What a bleak world we live in.

Even when it wasn't this extreme, the news is designed to make us feel bad.

A few weeks ago we were panicking about out-of-control inflation, energy prices going up and a footballer kicking his own cat.

Having looked back & reflected on all the dire events going on in this world, I am starting to think there is no point in keeping up with the news anymore. Or maybe checking it once a week so I am not completely out of the loop on world affairs.

The news is designed to make use feel anxious. Negative news holds our attention longer.

There are rarely tributes anymore to the great work people do in society. Or if they do, it is right at the end when you are already mentally fatigued and have switched channels to watch something a bit more cheery.

There is no surprise anxiety and depression rates are going through the roof in all parts of society. If you were to believe what has been said on the news the last few years, there really is no hope.

I haven’t even got on to concerns about climate change and how we have basically destroyed the planet. But that is another thing that makes many of us concerned about the future.

I wish I could go back to the days of being a young child again. When I was blissfully ignorant of what was going on in the world.

When my father gave me the newspaper, I used to disregard the news. I instantly turn to the back pages and just read about the sports.

And I was better off doing this, despite my team being a disappointment and often losing.

Seeing your team lose 4–0 every week is nothing compared to what is going on at the minute. Scaremongering has been a constant theme in news reporting to sell headlines and keep people in check.

Now, it seems like we have more right than ever to be scared. But I am not sure that living in fear is a good way to live your scarce years on this dying planet.

So I am tempted to start putting my head in the sand and switching off. Trying to live a more happy existence, where I can focus on the things within my control.

And stop feeling down about how messed up the world is around me.
