Footballer faces 4 years in jail for animal abuse
Another day, another dollar. Another shameful footballer’s ego getting the better of them. And this one was quite shocking.
As a video of Footballer Kurt Zouma unsavory behavior towards his cat circulates, you can't help thinking, we need to stop putting sports stars on a pedestal.
You could say he has apologized and paid a hefty fine of £250k so must be hurting. But this is only two weeks' wages. Which may be where much of the problem lies…
Are we to blame as a society for this clear lack of morals? Scandal after scandal with high-profile athletes. They think they are invincible. Because they have talent that is celebrated in society, they have free rein to do what they want.
I am not saying we shouldn't admire talent. Many have worked ridiculously hard to get into their position of privilege. But when young kids are getting smoke blown up their arse every day, it is bound to go to their heads.
And then the crazy money comes flying in. Many Premier League footballers get paid more in a month than a CEO’s annual salary. Some at the bigger clubs are still in their teens. And we are then surprised that they go off the rails.
More needs to be done earlier to help keep these egos in check.
Social Media is a blessing and a curse
The impact that social media has had on our mental health and relationships is pretty detrimental.
It is so poorly regulated that the abuse high-profile athletes suffer on a daily basis is outrageous. Racism is still so prevalent in football, with many players experiencing racist comments daily, that mostly go unpunished.
But there is one good thing that has come with the rise of social media. It has allowed those in power to get called out and held responsible for their bullshit.
After the video emerged, a petition online has gained over 70,000 signatures stating Zouma should face prosecution charges.
He could also face criminal charges in his home country of France, which could lead to a 4-year sentence if convicted.
Is this just another case of ‘cancel culture’ gone mad?
There is a valid argument that many people take offense too easily and are quick to jump on anything and go after the ‘offenders’ livelihood. If someone doesn’t like something someone said once, they voice their outrage and want to ruin their careers.
Cancel culture is mad and no one is safe. A lot of it I am actually sick of. Jealous people trying to ruin careers from their mom’s basement.
Bringing up a comment someone made 20 years ago when they were 12. Have we not all said and done things we are not proud of when we were younger? It’s getting ridiculous.
But this is not one of those cases and raising awareness of it is imperative. It highlights the toxic behavior that goes on behind closed doors of the super-elite that would have never been addressed before.
Admittedly, I’m not the biggest animal lover in the world.
But I just didn't get why he and his brother found it so funny.
To kick a cat across the room and slap it. It was just abuse to an innocent animal.
It was just so wrong.
Zouma’s response to these accusations
He didn't have any defense. Said no excuses. But what excuse could you use really? I was practicing for the game on Saturday? It wasn't a real cat? We did it to raise awareness of animal cruelty?
If he did try to defend it in any way, he would have gotten even more crucified. Just has to hold his hands up and say, “Sorry everyone, I am an utter scumbag.”
When will these super-rich ‘role models’ learn?
Don’t f**k with cats.
