Summary

Caitlin McColl invites writers to contribute to her publication, "Inkslinger Magazine," across various genres without submission rules, allowing simultaneous publication elsewhere.

Abstract

Caitlin McColl has established a "Guest Stories" section in her "Inkslinger Magazine" publication on Medium, welcoming submissions in Non-Fiction, Fiction, Mindfulness, Mental Health, and Poetry. Writers are encouraged to use the tag "inkslingermag" to feature their work, which grants them visibility on the publication while maintaining the freedom to publish with other outlets. McColl emphasizes a preference for content that is not overly graphic, vulgar, or sexualized. In return for hosting, she requests that guest writers mention her Medium page or publication and suggests that they include a reference to the hosting in their posts for mutual promotion. McColl plans to periodically highlight guest pieces in feature posts to increase their exposure.

Opinions

  • McColl acknowledges the inspiration for her publication's guest writer policy comes from Pam Reeder and an article about "Lists!" which she found overly complicated and has since simplified.
  • She expresses a personal connection to non-fiction pieces that explore life, death, grief, and loss, finding such topics cathartic.
  • McColl is open to a wide range of fiction genres but explicitly excludes romance and content that is vulgar, crass, overly sexual, or sexualized.
  • For poetry, she welcomes contributions but with the caveat that grotesque, gory, or overly sexual content will not be accepted.
  • She shows enthusiasm for content related to mindfulness, meditation, yoga, Stoicism, gratitude, spirituality, and mental health advocacy.
  • McColl values reciprocal promotion and encourages guest writers to mention her Medium page or publication in their posts to foster mutual support.
  • She is committed to regularly featuring guest writers' pieces, although the frequency (weekly or monthly) will depend on the volume of submissions.
  • McColl concludes by inviting writers to participate in this collaborative venture and expresses anticipation for the diverse contributions to her publication.

Writing

Want to Write for My Publication With No Submission Rules?

And be free to publish with other pubs?

(If you aren’t a Medium member and want to read this article in full for free, click this sentence! If you are a Medium member — thank you for your support!)

Okay, so maybe I’m telling a teensy fib here with my title.

Maybe I should word it, do you want your writing to feature on my publication with no submission rules? So you can easily get your articles to other eyeballs featured in a special column on my Inkslinger Magazine publication? And with the freedom to still submit to other publications?

If that sounds good to you, read on, dear Inkslingers!

I’ve created a section called Guest Stories. And if you write Non-Fiction, Fiction, Mindfulness, Mental Health or Poetry and want your pieces to feature somewhere else besides just your own personal Medium page without the hassle of jumping through submission hoops of Medium pubs? Then you can do so easily by simply using the tag: inkslingermag and be showcased on my Publication!

I can’t take credit for this awesome idea. That goes to Pam Reeder who let me know about a Medium article about a publication from Lists! so thanks to Pam and this article that seemed a bit more complicated than it needed to be (to me) so I’ve simplified it without doing the lists thing.

Let me break down the types of content I’d like to see from my Guest Writers on Inkslinger Magazine:

Non Fiction

Do you write non-fiction? Primarily this would be self-improvement pieces and life lessons/life musings with heart and soul. Under this umbrella would also be articles on grief, loss, death and all of that stuff that I personally find really cathartic to write about. So basically writings about life and death! Then tag insklingermag.

Fiction

Do you write fiction? I’m good with pretty much all genres (except romance, sorry, just not a fan). But if you want to write about a fantasy twist on Little Red Riding Hood, or a sci-fi space opera, or a dystopian/post apocalyptic world, or flying airships in a steampunk universe, or maybe a crime drama mystery, or some good ‘ol Stephen King-esque horror (but not too gory horror, please!), fill your boots! (oh but also no vulgar/crass/overly sexual/sexualized content, please and thanks) and tag inkslingermag.

Poetry

Or are you a poet at heart? Share your poetry as a guest writer as well if you wish by tagging inkslingermag ! (caveat: no grotesque, gory, overly sexual etc. poems).

Mindfulness

Are you into living in the present moment (aka mindfulness), or meditation? Maybe yoga? Or Stoicism? Or perhaps you’re a big proponent of gratitude? Or maybe you’re into spirituality? Then I’d love for you to tag inkslingermag in your Medium tags so that you’ll show up as a guest writer!

Mental Health

Are you a big advocate of mental health and self care? Do you write about wellbeing? Or even psychology and neuroscience? Then jump on in and tag inkslingermag so your pieces will automatically appear in the Guest Stories section!

It’s as easy peasy as that!

And if you’re writing about a specific topic (like mindfulness or fantasy for example) you can put that in your subtitle in brackets in whatever way you want if you want people to easily know what your stuff is about at a glance.

And not only will your pieces appear in my Guest Stories column, but regularly (I'm not sure exactly what that means just yet — maybe weekly? Or monthly? I guess it depends on how many ‘submissions’ I get for guest writers) I’ll write a post highlighting the guest pieces of that week or month and link to them so they get even more reads!

But, if I could ask for a little something in return? For me hosting your pieces on my Publication and writing weekly (or monthly) Guest Feature posts about your pieces — if you could either mention my Medium page (caitlinmccoll.medium.com) or my Pub (medium.com/inkslinger-magazine), or even just tag me somewhere at the bottom of your post, that would be greatly appreciated! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a single sentence. Not going to force you of course, but it would be nice to have some reciprocal promotion —let’s help each other out!

So, what say you friends and followers and fellow Mediumites? Do you want to be showcased in my mish-mash of a publication? There’s something for almost everyone I think.

Let’s give this a whirl and see what happens! Looking forward to seeing what you write for/on Inkslinger Magazine and also to featuring your stories!

Farewell for now, fellow Inkslingers!
