Wanna Play a Game?
Day 17 Preptober writing prompt challenge
Day 17: What was your antagonist’s favourite game as a child, and why?
Question from the Preptober 31 Day Challenge from the Character Collective.
The antagonists
So let’s start with a reminder of who the antagonists are.
We have Mark and Bartholemew who hardly seem like antagonists but for the purposes of Knot That Hot and the relationship between Jack and Mario, they are about as close as we are going to get. At least, as far as I know for now. There may be an unknown antagonist who has not shown themself yet. For now though, Mark and Bart it is.
Mark
Me: Mark, what was your favourite game as a child, and why?
Mark laughs with a little too much evil for my likings and shoots a sideways glance to Bart who instantly rolls his eyes and shakes his head. Oh, no.
Bart: (to Mark) Just don’t.
Mark: What?
Mark is doing his best to look very innocent but he is still failing miserably.
Mark: They asked. I must answer truthfully and honestly. For it is my duty and honour as Ringmaster to…
Bart: Don’t be a bitch.
Mark. Bitch? Please.
Bart: Bitch, please!
Me: OMG, Mark! Game.
Mark is now laughing. Like, a full belly laugh. He’s throwing his head back and everything. Bugger this. We’ll come back to Mark.
Bart
Me: Bart, what was your favourite game as a child, and why?
Bart: Why are you even asking me, I grew up with that *waves indignantly at Mark*
Mark: *gasps very loudly* That? I’m shocked and appalled.
Bart: Yeah, well, I’m still suffering from your hand-me-downs.
Mark: So harsh, Bartholemew. Do not call Mario a hand-me-down.
Me: What? Oh my god, please no.
Jack: I thought you had sex with Mark after you were with Bart.
Mario: Before and after, honey.
Jack: Oh, yeah, that makes sense.
Me: *burrying my face in my hands* Please make it stop.
Mark: Oh baby, we haven’t even gotten started yet.
Me: Ew. Bart. Game. Please. I’m begging you.
Mark: Hide and Seek.
Ok, so Mark once again just cracked up laughing and Bart growled.
Mario: Oh, I miss that noise.
Jack: I could try.
Me: You know what, forget it. Just, don’t even.
I am so sorry for where this is going. I had no idea this was going to happen when the four boys got together. And I certainly didn’t expect it to degrade into innuendo and sarcasm so quickly. For clarity, book two focuses on Bart and book three on Mark, so this right here is a very interesting exploration of what I have coming my way over the Rainbow Circus series. It’s going to be a journey.
Bart: We used to hide. They didn’t seek. Said enough?
Oh! Hahaha. I mean, that’s terrible. For a little background, Mark is the eldest sibling of three. Bart is the baby of the family, eight years younger than Bart. The three were raised by their single aunty who worked two jobs and so Mark was often in charge of looking after the two younger brothers.
Mark: And sometimes, I needed a break.
Bart: You left me in the treehouse overnight!
Mario: That doesn’t sound so bad.
Bart: It was in winter.
Mark: Oh, you had a blanket up there, you were fine.
Bart: You mean the one the stray dog slept and pissed on? Thanks.
Mark: You’re welcome.
Jack: I would have been a firey then.
Everyone just went silent and turned to Jack.
Jack: I would have gotten you down.
Mario: Nawwww, babe.
Bart: *smirks* Thank you, Jack.
Me: Ok, are we done here? So, Mark’s favorite game was Hide and Seek because they’re a bit more evil than I thought.
Mark: Just wait until you start writing. I have some stories to tell you.
Ummm… huh? Ok.
Me: Bart?
Bart: My favorite game was solitaire.
Haha, ok, that made all of them crack up laughing.
Wow, that was a journey in and of itself. I guess these characters are all really starting to make themselves known. I learned so much more than I bargained for in today’s challenge. Amazing.
