walk with the mountains
a poem

I set out for a hike on a muddy snowy path not a sole did I encounter except my own soul
I pass a river gurgling and laughing rock faces of faces
I stomp over ice and slide through more mud and breathe finally chest expands and I am home
I thank the mushy dirt that my boots sink into and get stuck in
I smoke some tobacco and offer it back to the earth
I give thanks to the wind that chills me and the earth for giving me this solitude this beauty this day
grateful for my body these legs that don’t ache anymore that carry me far
I pick up some glass broken shards that do not belong
thank you said the earth for when you tune out you tune in and uncover layers that need to be seen
there are few clouds only open, translucent blue and the star sun playing with me
I hear the tap tapping of a woodpecker music to my ears he symbolizes rhythm and drums of change opportunity knocking
breathing in and out in tune with the heartbeat of the earth
I turn in a circle I see the views mountains hills grass trees snow I feel welcomed and embraced
when I get to my car a dog bounds at me exuberance unbridled the owner apologizes no need, I say
I understand his joy to be free
