Waiting For Inspiration

Or asking for inspiration

Waiting for inspiration can take a while. Distractions are drawn to this state. What we must realize is that inspiration is something we can ask for. Inspiration is more likely to come when it is called forth. There is so much inspiration just waiting to come forth. All it needs is an invitation.

There are humans waiting for inspiration and there is inspiration waiting to be called forth. Without the invitation there is just a lot of waiting going on. In this state distractions sneak in. Distractions never need an invitation. They are just looking for a state of waiting in order to come gushing forth.

Let us say that you are standing in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles. You are the sixteenth person in line so you realize that you will be doing a lot of waiting. This makes you a target for every distraction imaginable. The distractions will inundate you and could very well leave you in a state of unease and irritation and impatience. It is unlikely that you will get very inspired.

Try this: When you first get in line and realize that you will be doing a lot of waiting, clear your mind and ask for inspiration to come forth. If you are into mantras or affirmations you might silently say something like, “I am an empty vessel through which inspiration may flow through. I call forth inspiration to come through me now.”

As you wait in line everything that you notice will become inspiring rather than distracting. The tiniest little thing you become aware of has the potential for great inspiration if you are not too busy waiting and thinking and being distracted. Inspiration may even come through that has nothing to do with your immediate environment. Waiting in line is a great time to call forth inspiration and it can actually be a pleasant experience.

Now let us imagine that you are sitting in your desk chair in front of your laptop. You want to write a story or article or poem. So you sit there staring at the blank screen waiting for inspiration.

Meanwhile inspiration is also waiting for you to call it forth. But you don’t and you just sit there waiting. You get distracted and frustrated and impatient and you end up saying something like, “Golly gosh darn, writing sure is hard!”

Try this: Take a moment to completely empty your mind of all thoughts. Deep breaths, meditation; whatever. Close your eyes then silently say something like this, “I am an empty vessel through which a story may come through into this world. I call forth a story to come through me now.”

If you are a skilled typist keep your eyes closed, put your fingers over the keyboard and type the very first sentence that comes through your noggin. Do not think about it, do not concern yourself with spelling or grammar; just take dictation, just obediently type that sentence. If the sentences keep coming keep typing them.

Or, you can open your eyes and reread that sentence. That sentence is your prompt that draws in the rest of the story. With the story starting to come through continue to ALLOW it to come through. Inspiration is answering your call. Don’t suddenly start writing. Simply type the story as it comes through. You can edit and polish it later.

Try it. It may take doing this several times before you get the hang of it. Know that your brain and ego will try to interfere. They want to be in control. Because of our conditioning it is not easy to become an empty vessel. It takes practice but in a state of being an empty vessel we have direct access to inspiration and then all we have to do is ask for it.

This, of course, can be used in all aspects of life, not just writing or waiting in line at the DMV. The important thing to know is that inspiration is just an empty vessel away.

As some historical figure once said, “Ask and ye shall receive.”

Or, we can just keep waiting, mired in a sea of perpetual distractions.
