Summary

The website content provides a strategy for managing a high volume of Medium story notifications by using a dedicated email account.

Abstract

The author, Harold Zeitung, addresses the common issue of receiving a large number of email notifications from Medium due to following many writers. He suggests creating a separate email account specifically for Medium subscriptions to keep the regular inbox uncluttered. This method allows for easy scanning and management of stories, with the ability to search for specific writers and selectively read and delete content. The author emphasizes that this approach ensures readers don't miss out on valuable content and maintains a high read rate for less prolific writers.

Wait! Don’t Unsubscribe

I will show you an ultra-easy way to manage the flood of emailed stories.

Most of us agree that Medium is an excellent platform for readers and writers. There are so many great writers here. I want to subscribe to every one of them. Medium tells me that as of today, I am following 341 writers. I have chosen to subscribe to most of these people. Some of these writers post as many as six or seven times a day.

I frequently receive more than 100 emails from Medium in a day.

Does this bother me? — Not in the least because I manage these emails. Let me show you how.

  1. Create an email account dedicated to Medium subscriptions. I use Gmail.
  2. Go into your Medium settings and change your email to the one you created.

Now you are in a position to manage your inbox. Your Medium subscriptions now go to your dedicated email inbox, leaving your regular inbox clean.

All the arriving stories are easy to scan. I can search for specific writers. I’ll start reading their stories in the email and can click on the “Read more” button if I want to pursue the entire story.

For prolific writers, I can search for them. I can scan all their unread stories, select those I want to read, and delete the others from my inbox. My read rate of prolific writers is 10% to 30%; my read rate for writers that publish seven stories or less a week is generally 100%.

Get yourself a dedicated Medium email, subscribe to everyone, and take control of your reading. When you do it this way, you won’t miss that excellent content everyone is discussing.
