In the age of the Internet, it is so common to see tweets trending and pictures or videos going viral every day. These viral tweets, pics or videos feed untapped human curiosity, amusement or excitement for all the right (or wrong) reasons you can think of. One such tweet was from a prolific Indian novelist and columnist, Shobhaa De.
On February 21, 2017, Shobhaa had tweeted a picture of a cop and captioned it, “Heavy Police Arrangement in Mumbai Today” (translated).
But the pun didn’t go well with Twitterati who slammed the columnist for being insensitive. This picture is of a cop from the state of Madhya Pradesh, India and his name is Daulatram Jogawat. After this tweet, she was trolled hard by the Twitterati as they pointed out that a pun like this makes up for body shaming.
The cop himself replied to her stating the real reason for his excessive obesity.
“I am hurt with Shobhaa De’s tweet poking fun at me. I have put on weight due to insulin imbalance, followed by my gall bladder operation in 1993. She can pay for my treatment if she wants, instead of making fun.”

However, the Centre for Obesity and Digestive Surgery (CODS) was successful in beating others where Dr Muffazal Lakdawala offered to help him in the surgery. Jogawat was diabetic and weighed over 180 kilograms.
Jogawat underwent gastric bypass surgery on March 2nd, 2017, which suppresses nutrient and calorie absorption, at Saifee Hospital in Mumbai. The entire expense was borne by the Madhya Pradesh police welfare fund.

Post-operation, Mr Jogawat thanked the people, media and his senior officials by saying,
“I am thankful to my senior officers and media for this. A wrong tweet has changed my life”.
This was indeed a heartwarming story. There is no doubt in this unpopular opinion that “The Internet can make or break things”. This surely made the life of a humble cop, Mr Jogawat by a fat-shaming tweet.
