Ventriloquist Uses Comedy To Say Quiet Part Out Loud
The dual nature of art, inspiration, and offensive comedy

This Terry Fator guy has got more puppets than Trump — holy ****, one of them IS Trump!
I’m so ****ing mad.
It’s silly. How mad should a person get about losing one more celebrity hero? But Terry Fator’s talent is magical.
I think back to the performances on America’s Got Talent that ultimately won him the grand prize and a prolonged Vegas residency for over $100 million.
Here’s the first one. The moment that puppet begins to sing “At Last” by Etta James still takes my breath away.
While lots of people can imitate all kinds of voices, almost no one can do so as a ventriloquist.
Terry occasionally sings, but it’s mostly his puppets impersonating famous singers, often bizarrely better than he does. His repertoire includes Roy Orbison, Maroon 5, Jessica Simpson, Gnarls Barkley, Elvis, Garth Brooks, and Marvin Gaye.
Here’s the full collection of his AGT performances, which includes a turtle singing “What A Wonderful World” in the voice of Kermit the Frog, ultimately peaking in the finale special with Terry’s puppet version of Dean Martin singing a duet with the real Kermit the Frog (and a new judging panel of Muppets: Beeker, the Swedish Chef, Animal, and a special message from Miss Piggy).
Was there any question he would win first place and the hearts of America?
The world’s harshest critics became his biggest fans. That rude British guy Simon Cowell, legendary for making people cry on American Idol, instead said Terry might be one of the mast talented performers on the planet.
Piers Morgan, another rude British guy carrying an equally toxic torch of masculinity, didn’t tell Terry his ventriloquism was emasculating. “You’re a great impersonator,” he said, “a great singer, and a great comedian.”
With the $1 million prize and his posse of puppets, he’d next try to win the heart of Oprah.
I thought talking as a trans girl was hard, but at least I get to use my mouth
After winning America’s Got Talent, Terry Fator next needed to convince Oprah to give ventriloquists a chance. And because he’d promised only his puppets would do the talking, all he could do was grin and pray.
On March 17, 2008, he appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Simon Cowell came along to prime the audience. He insisted Fator was a one-of-a-kind ventriloquist. Terry gave great performances with Winston the Turtle and country singer Walter T. Airedale.
But Oprah didn’t look interested until he brought out Julius. “Once I started into Marvin Gaye, she fell out of her chair.”
With an eager heart, I Googled a few recent reviews
After watching all of those YouTube videos, my first stop was TripAdvisor. I don’t think I was ready for what I’d missed by only watching the AGT winner’s earliest ventriloquism videos.
I’ll admit, there are lots and lots (and lots) of 5-star reviews. They praise all of the things I hoped they would praise.
But the 1-star reviews note stuff I didn’t even think would matter. Who makes this stuff part of their comedy routine?!
Besides Dave Chapelle…
I will give credit where it’s due. He is a wonderful ventriloquist and surprisingly good singer but that’s where it ends. His comedy routine is homophonic, sexist, racist and down right offensive at some points.
Now I am not an easily offended person and don’t fall into everything being PC, especially for comedy. As in I think George Carlin was one of the best ever. But you sit through a show where he repeatedly and cruelly slams gays, transsexuals, Mexicans, anyone married more than once, women over 40, oh the list goes on and on.

Listen, I’m a queer mom with transgender experiences. My daughter is queer. My wife is queer (obviously lol). Most of my friends are queer or at least are allies.
So there’s no amount of talent that will help me overcome the visceral reaction I have to comedy that mistreats queer people.

After several years of controversy and complaints, Gary Costa, Executive Director of LGBTQ/AIDS charity Golden Rainbow, sent a letter protesting how Terry Fator’s show treated LGBTQ+ people:
A few months ago I attended this offensive show at The Mirage Hotel and Casino and was horrified at the blatant racist, transphobic and homophobic content of the Terry Fator show. I contacted the management of The MGM including their diversity manager to formally lodge a complaint. While removing the offensive Trump puppet is a start it isn’t enough.
Blatant discrimination and public ridicule of Latinos and trans and LGBTQ individuals has no place on the Las Vegas strip disguised as entertainment . As long as the MGM corporation continues to allow this man to spew his hate under the guise of family comedy I will continue to boycott their company and keep pressuring their management to remove this outdated performer from their property permanently.
There are literally a dozen or so ventriloquist acts in Las Vegas that are funny, entertaining, talented, and enjoyable to watch. Terry Fator unfortunately is NOT one of them.
Not all ventriloquists are puppets
In 2007, Terry Fator won the second season of America’s Got talent. In his early forties, he never expected to win.
In 2017, Darci Lynne won the twelfth season of America’s Got Talent. And she did so at the absurdly-young-age of 12 years old.

Now that it’s 2022, Darci is a lot older and even more successful. She’s branched out with a plethora of puppet characters, a singing career just for her (well, and her band the Imaginaries), as well as occasional news updates from her British dog Binks.
For me, it’s a sign that one bad thing doesn’t mean the end of everything. Even if it feels like it.
What ventriloquism means to me as a trans girl
Terry Fator isn’t the only comedian I recently reconsidered. Dave Chappelle also just would not stop making ignorant jokes to make a point at the cost of the collateral harm done to queer people.
And yet in one of his recent-ish specials, Chappelle took audiences on a history lesson like only he can deliver. By the end, he taught the audience that while something in the moment can seem like and in fact can be a great evil, those atrocities can also plant the seeds for an overwhelming good to come.
“And if our civil rights movement was a car,” Chappelle said, “[Till’s] dead body was premium gas. This was a very definitive moment in American history, where every thinking and feeling person [said], ‘We gotta do better than this.’”
And from such evil came the civil rights movement that made so much of my own existence as a trans person possible.
“How could this be,” Chappelle said, “that this lie could make the world a better place? It’s maddening.”
Can I tell you that’s already what happened with Terry Fator?
An inspiration for at least one queer girl
Darci Lynne was born in 2004, just three years before Terry Fator’s victory revitalized ventriloquism across the world.
Without his victory, would she have found her voice?
It’s hard to know, but however it happened, I’m happy she did it.
I’m a queer girl, and I’m happy she learned to speak so loudly at such a young age.
I’m happy she’s become an inspiration for girls everywhere.
Because for queer people, the quiet part is what we need to say out loud.
