Vantage of lost promises

A reminder to every life that depends on soil

Photo by Halima Bouchouicha on Unsplash

“Hold on tight” I heard the roots calling out to the microbes and every life in the rich topsoil that tightened their grip on the roots of the trees that still managed to survive in the area.

“Death” had taken the form of Lifeless Dunes this time.

Even the thought of him gives me shudders.

We had hoped humans would help us live, but they turned out to be the most selfish creatures we’d ever met on this planet.

I remember our grandparents telling me about how kind humans once were.

It is due to their kindness that we had agreed on a pact to protect them by working tirelessly to control the natural cycles on our planet, to make it conducive for all of us, including humans to survive on this planet.

Little did we know that the moment humans prospered, they would forget all about the pact and the help we’d done to maintain the different biogeochemical cycles.

I may be just a tiny earthworm waiting for my turn to die, but I can’t thank the trees enough, who are still trying their best to hold on to protect us, fighting this losing battle with every drop of strength in them.

As I lay here watching dreadful Death claim my friends, family, and neighbors one by one, squeezing the life out of our rich soil, the only place our people can survive, I can see humans walk past us like their life will in no way be affected by all this reckless damage.

Fools who know nothing about our efforts to keep the life on earth going nor the danger they are in after we are all gone.

Even when I saw death right in front of me, standing tall with his black hooded machine that incessantly churned us into his army of lifeless sand dunes, I prayed a last prayer for the ignorant humans hoping my prayer will be strong enough to save them all.

My heart ached as I took my final breath when I realized I’d failed my grandmother to whom I’d sworn to protect humans.
