Using Gratitude To Heal

An experience with Gratitude

A little more than a year back, I had an injury in my left eye where something really sharp had pierced in which resulted in a cut in the cornea. The injury being in the eye, I wasn’t able to expose myself to any kind of light and was confined to my room with the drapes on completely for 2 weeks. At times I felt excruciating discomfort and pain and I used to spend most of my time eyes closed and lying down.

Once I woke up in the middle of the night with acute pain. I believe it was around 2 AM in the morning. I was simply sitting in the dark waiting for it to go away since if I lied down it hurt even more. As I was sitting, having nothing to do, suddenly, there was this deep reverence and gratitude that emerged for my body. I guess it is only during pain we are reminded of the value of our body. Perhaps it was due to the silence prevalent at that time, where the atmosphere is devoid of the noise of the minds with everyone sleeping. Not sure then, but in retrospect, I believe I was guided by God(Or Higher Wisdom, Universe, whatever word works for you) to use awareness and gratitude towards my body to heal myself.

I started taking a tour of my body. The way you take a tour of a house, you would go from room to room, likewise, I, a being of light, as a witness, traversed from my head to toe within, observing all my organs and giving it light of gratitude and spending some time with each of them. Literally, feeling immense gratitude for each and thanking it from the heart. I spent more time with my eyes since that is where I had some pain and discomfort.

I felt so exuberant while I was doing that. I believe that lasted for around 25–30 minutes and I didn't even realize when the pain had vanished! I felt so good as if that nothing had happened to me and that night, I believe major healing was done. It definitely catalyzed the healing process and taught me the lesson that will help me in my life.

At times, kids cry just to get their parent's attention. Likewise, sometimes our body which is in pain just wants our attention. We have been taking it for granted and very seldom or almost never take out time to offer it our compassion, our gratitude, our love.

Our body is a very beautiful tool gifted to us to express ourselves in this world, an interface between us metaphysical beings and the physical world outside. Without it, we won’t be able to express ourselves. Hence, gratitude is something that should come very naturally for the body. It is a house, a temple, for ‘I’ the soul. It should never be taken for granted.

So go within, spend time with your body, with each and every organ, and from the deepest core of your being thank it — “Thank You. Thank You. A Hundred Thousand Times, Thank You!”. This is will improve our relationship with our body too.

After this incident, I started practicing this regularly, but somewhere with time, I lost touch again. It was only last week where I met an old friend who shared her experience of gratitude, reminded me of this, and from the last few days, I have started practicing this again. Big thank you to her to remind me of the magic of gratitude. It feels great. We have been blessed with so much, but we tend to forget that.

Let us remind our selves to count our blessings and allow our hearts to radiate ripples of gratitude across the universe.

A hundred thousand times, thank you!
