Use the “Power Hour” to Boost Your Creativity and Productivity

Tiny actions can go a long way

I read Power Hour by Adrienne Herbert a while back — it’s a productivity and self-help book I strongly recommend, but I hadn’t been applying its teaching until a few weeks ago.

To briefly summarize the book, your power hour is the first hour of your day. Herbert states that you should use it to advance your life or a project you’re working on, and she promises you outstanding results.

Now, let’s talk about my experience with the power hour, and why you should give it a try.

How I use the “Power Hour”

I highly respect people who are able to wake up at 5 am, but it’s not my case. I need nine solid hours of sleep and wake up at 7:30 am, but when you wake up is not important — as long as it’s an hour earlier than when your alarm usually rings. What is essential is that you use your first waking hour to do something that matters.

Honestly, I couldn’t imagine doing anything before drinking coffee or watching an episode of Modern Family (don’t judge my morning routine), but I gave it a try anyway — and it was a smart move.

My goal was to use the first hour of my day to read and learn, as I found that I retain information much better in the morning. In addition, I wanted to write down my intention and goals for the day to start on a good note and motivate myself.

Here’s what my power hour looks like:

After waking up at 7:30 and fighting with my inner lazy-ass self not to hit snooze, I drink a glass of water to awaken my organs and body. Then, I do some slow yoga and stretches, a few energizing breathing exercises, and sit at my desk to free-write a page or two. Usually, my brain is still half-asleep so I just write up a list of things I’m grateful for and what I want to accomplish. Finally, I use the remaining time to read.

When 8:30 am hits, it’s time for breakfast and officially starting my day.

What are the benefits?

In just a week of practicing the power hour, I was able to notice tremendous results: I’m proud of myself, I feel accomplished, and I’m really moving closer to my goals. Focusing on bettering my craft (writing) first thing in the morning makes it unavoidable — I can’t get lost in my day and just forget to study.

Here are the main benefits the power hour will bring you:

  • Happiness. It’s scientifically proven that waking up an hour earlier reduces depression and anxiety.
  • Achievement. Working on something first thing in the morning means you’re not yet disturbed by your kids, clients, or else — it’s only you and the goal you want to achieve. It makes it easier and faster to reach it.
  • Motivation. If you use this time to exercise, your motivation and clarity will skyrocket — you’ll start your day feeling your best, ready to tackle anything that comes your way.
  • Peace. No more “Omg when will I find time to exercise today?” or “Geez, another day where I won’t have time to write” because it’s already done.

How can you use the Power Hour?

You can use this time to do anything that matters to you. What’s a goal you’re working on? Is it becoming a proficient yogi? Write a book? Read more? All of the above?

You can choose to focus on one thing or more. For example, you could use the first half an hour to practice yoga and the second half to write. I recommend focusing on one thing if you want to see results faster, but anything that works for you is best.

The author also runs a podcast where she interviews successful people about their own power hours. Check it out if you need inspiration!

Conclusion

This book is full of actionable tips and interesting facts about sleep — I highly recommend it! It’s the type of book that really delivers, unlike many other self-help reads. Adrienne Herbert conveys her energy and motivation in her writing, leaving you uplifted, hopeful, and ready to make the best of your mornings.
