How to Finally Get What You Want in Life

What you don’t know about “manifestation”

Photo by Miles Loewen on Unsplash

I’ve always been a self-development and spirituality enthusiast and read countless books about these topics. The first time I learned about manifestation and the Law of Attraction was in Gabby Bernstein’s book The Universe Has Your Back — it blew my mind. I really wanted to think there was a higher power — the Universe — allowing us to get what we want.

Then I read Esther Hicks’ Ask and It is Given, and I became more skeptical about the thing. If you’ve never heard of this book, allow me to explain. Hicks says that an entity, Abraham, wrote this book through her to make these teachings available to everyone. I am a strong believer in life after death, guardian angels, spirits, and all — but this didn’t sit well with me for various reasons. In this book, Abraham/Hicks says that you only need to behave as something already happened to make it happen, without taking any specific action.

I strongly disagree with this.

You should definitely make your own opinion and read this book, as it’s a self-development fundamental. However, it was too woo-woo for me and I refuse to believe that you should leave your fate into the Universe’s hands without doing anything and just hope for your dreams to somehow come true.

In Ask and It is Given and in other books and videos about manifestation, the most important part to make it work is left out of the equation. During my vacation, I picked a book called Make It Happen by Jordanna Levin — it received high praise and I decided to give it a go.

Levin is not like Esther Hicks or other manifestation gurus you’re following on YouTube. She explains that successful manifestation is the result of believing, yes, but also taking action to make your dreams come true.

I recommend you start your spiritual journey with this book. It will teach you everything you need to know about manifestation, and it’s the most accurate material I’ve read on the topic. It’s a bit repetitive but it’s worth the read.

Anyway, let’s dive into the recipe to get what you want in life — based on my experience and everything I’ve read.

Take action

Yes, that’s the big secret. If you want your dream to come true, do the work. This sounds like common sense, yet many people forget about this — me included. I embraced the Law of Attraction and tried to manifest what I wanted in life with an exemplary spiritual practice: I meditated, visualized my dream life, wrote down my intentions every new moon… But nothing happened.

Because all of this is great, but if you don’t take action — it’s worthless. I wanted to become a screenwriter. I meditated on it and all, but it didn’t make me a screenwriter. However, when I actually sat down every morning to write and eventually finished my screenplay, I became one.

Think of something you’re trying to manifest. Is it your dream job? A soulmate? Money?

Now, what tiny steps could you implement to get closer to your desired outcome?

If you want a new job, have you updated your resume and applied to positions?

If it’s a new partner, do you put yourself out there and date actively?

If you want to manifest a certain amount of money, are you proactively searching for new clients or income sources?

I’m not saying the Universe doesn’t have your back because I believe it does. I also believe the Law of Attraction is real. You just have to do your part.

Cultivate positivity

You are what you attract, that’s a fact.

If you’re constantly afraid of not having enough money, you will never have enough of it.

If you’re pessimistic and negative, you will attract like-minded people into your life.

If you think you can’t do it, you won’t.

That’s why it’s important to cultivate positivity, and as Law of Attraction enthusiasts say: raise your vibration.

Everything has a vibration: people, objects, pets, everything. The Law of Attraction states that you attract stuff with a vibration that is similar to yours.

Meaning, if you hate yourself, you will likely attract people who hate themselves and end up in toxic relationships or work for bosses who treat you like garbage.

Look at what you attract into your life. Can you see the connection with your own vibration and state of mind?

Being optimistic and positive changes everything. You see life through new lenses, which allows you to overcome obstacles more easily, and you’re a more likable person altogether.

Laugh at your mistakes. See the glass half-full.

Act the way you want to feel, be the person you want to be

You get out of life what you put in.

Want more love in your life? Act like a loving person. Show love to yourself, to your relatives, to strangers. Perform small acts of kindness like paying for someone’s coffee or smiling at fellow subway riders.

This works for every other area of your life.

Want to feel healthier? Act like a healthy person. Eat better food, go to the gym.

Want to feel happier? Smile, be enthusiastic about things.

It might sound forced at first. But eventually, you will become the person you want to become.

It all comes down to action. You have to take action to change your life and make it what you want it to be.

Visualize

Every day, close your eyes for 5 minutes in the morning and before going to bed.

At night, visualize your bigger goal — your dream. Imagine the moment it comes true. It can be living in your dream house, working at your dream job, marrying your dream partner. Feel how it feels. This not only keeps you motivated, but it also tells the Universe what you want and that you are ready to receive it.

In the morning, visualize your day ahead. What do you want it to be? What actions can you take today to get closer to your goal/dream?

Give it time

In this article, Ayodeji Awosika explains that you can be successful at anything if you give yourself time.

Let’s say your dream is to become a successful writer. You write every day and do the visualization part — that’s great. Now, keep doing this for 5 years and you’re pretty sure to get where you want to be.

Conclusion

I believe in the Law of Attraction. I believe that you get what you ask for. You just have to put in the sweat equity and be ready to work for what you want, and opportunities will present themselves to you.
