Poetry + Ancestors
Untitled Poem
I ask my mother can you take me to the past I want to meet my ancestors to understand at last who they — are and why my heart ticks this way not knowing the very rumination is a summoning for the glory — in the cities they built from sweat and stone unconscious of the purity in the hands that caught babies birthed through blood of brown gravy mixed with a little maybe — I asked my mother can you show me my path I could hear her laugh wise that it is for me to devise through — a longing to learn the names that I yearned to speak from my lips carrying their burdens on my hips — as sentinel contrived in the inferno baptized in destiny — I asked my mother who will I love she rolled her eyes I was not surprised as — a ripe, brown spotted love brims on the edges of my heart repelling most — good spiced just right alluring to few I already knew
