Under the Weight of Summer Air
Poetry Contest: Summer Songs
Under Summer’s languid weight I lie, watching as thunderclouds roll by in the cavernous expanse of the evening sky.
The thirsty branches of the parch-ed trees reach up to the roiling grey canopy as birds seeking shelter pass by in flurries.
Beads of sweat linger still on my skin. My tolerance for heat is wearing thin as I wait for the coming tempest to begin,
Convinced my flesh will start to sizzle, the moment that it feels that drizzle of raindrops so longed for and highly beneficial
for washing away oppressive heat, cooling the boiling hot concrete that blisters the soles of my poor bare feet.
In every part of the city tonight I know that countless souls will fight to find the solace of deep sleep’s respite.
And so I watch and pray for rain to make the city cool again, to beat against my windowpane, and quench the thirsts of hot terrain. I find this summer weight a drain, and yearn for a storm to challenge heat’s reign.
