Summary

The content describes two post-apocalyptic dreams centered around surprisingly functional technology, where the dreamer encounters an intergalactic research center and a barter economy with a new form of currency.

Abstract

The author recounts two vivid dreams set in a post-apocalyptic future where humanity coexists with advanced technology and extraterrestrial beings. In the first dream, the protagonist stumbles upon an intergalactic research center with self-healing ships, where they are hired to partake in an expedition. The second dream portrays a world where traditional currency is obsolete, and a new economy based on bartering has emerged, with Uber adapting to accept goods like roast turkeys and tangerines as payment. The narrative touches on themes of human resilience, the adaptation of technology, and the rebuilding of society after a catastrophic event.

Opinions

  • The author finds the presence of functional, advanced technology in a post-apocalyptic setting intriguing and positive, particularly the self-healing ship.
  • There is a sense of humor and irony in the dreamer's recognition of their own Ikea glass Tupperware in a post-apocalyptic setting, emphasizing personal attachment to possessions.
  • The author seems skeptical about the proposed "black dots" currency, considering it overpriced and less practical than traditional bartering items like food.
  • The dreams reflect a hopeful outlook on humanity's ability to adapt and rebuild after an apocalypse, with technology playing a key role in facilitating interspecies communication and societal functions.

Two Post-Apocalyptic Dreams ft. Surprisingly Functional Technology

Other people dream about teeth falling out but me? Science.

Sure, I’ve had the standard “why are my teeth falling out” and “surprise test I didn’t study for” dreams.

But the best dreams I’ve had involved futuristic technologies straight out of science fiction… involving roast turkeys?? And expensive tangerines??

Dream #1: Intergalactic Research Center

It’s post-apocalypse and aliens have infiltrated earth. They’re nice.

Apparently, I was on the run as part of a pack of humans who were just trying to survive when I came across a building that’s become an intergalactic research center. I try going into to steal food and supplies.

When I enter they’re like, you don’t need to sneak in, this is an open facility. They’re an intergalactic research center focusing on interspecies relations and understanding/ translating knowledge across species to better communication. And I was like, hey that’s really similar to the kind of research I was doing before the apocalypse.

I get hired somehow.

So I’m on this ship's expedition to collect information.

The ship hits an iceberg and I PANIC because it’s cold and I can’t swim. Water starts pouring in and I’m at PEAK anxiety, but no one else seems to be. Someone on the ship looks at me funny and says:

You know the ship is self-healing, right?

And sure enough, the ship seals right up as if it never hit an iceberg.

Dream #2: Post-apocalyptic currency

It’s also post-apocalyptic, but humans turned out to be more resilient than we thought we might be. After “the apocalypse”, it decimated the human population but we were resilient in rebuilding. There’s some greenery growing back.

There are just fewer humans, so you might see one other human across two whole cities. To survive, everyone congregates in these rebuilt houses and stores to stay together and share resources and skillsets.

I stay at one of these housing stations.

I find my Ikea glass Tupperware and I know it’s specifically MY glassware because in non-dreamland I’ve been trying to remove the sticker for AGES and it doesn’t come off. In non-dreamland it’s been soaking in warm water and I know exactly what the shape of the remaining sticker looks like.

And in my dream, that was EXACTLY it. I was so certain that that glass Tupperware was mine. I’m not sure how my Tupperware got there but my dream reasoning was that this was mine before the apocalypse so … I took the communal (*akhen*, stolen) glassware with me. It’s mine. Fight me.

So I pack away my glassware. I call my uber (which still exists??? post-apocalypse???) to my next “housing station”. This is wild because I still have a phone and the phone lines still work; there’s electricity post-apocalypse too.

What there isn’t is CURRENCY. There are no dollars anymore. No one cares about money anymore.

Everyone barters. So the uber adapted to that kind of barter system on their platform.

When you enter a city that you wanted to travel to, it shows multiple options of drivers who are making the drive the next day. When I entered the next city station, I got the following exchange offers:

  • one whole roast turkey
  • 3 boxes of tangerines
  • 11 black dots*

The black “dots” are what Uber has tried to pitch as the new “currency” but is — in dreamland — agreed upon as useless and overpriced relative to the actual price of things.

The last thing I remember is thinking: “wow, 3 boxes of tangerines is EXPENSIVE”, how are you going to find this post-apocalypse???

Lucy (The Eggcademic) [she/her] originally journaled about these weird futuristic technology dreams here. She wants to note that since then, her Ikea Tupperware stickers have successfully been washed off, so if there’s an apocalypse she’ll never know which glassware was hers to begin with. Unfortunately.
