Turn Medium into a Gold Mine By Accepting these Truths
If you do this, you will earn more. I promise.
I’m just assuming you wouldn’t mind making a few more dollars on Medium.
Am I right? Then you should read this advice all the way to the end.
I managed to earn $3400 in my second full month.
But in order to do that, I had to learn some lessons, some of which were a little uncomfortable. In this article, I would like to share them with you.
You will piss people off. Deal with it.
Unfortunately, it is also part of Medium that hateful comments are written. If you want to be successful here, you just have to accept that.
We humans are so different, have such different views and values, that you can be sure that some readers don’t want to hear what you have to say. Oftentimes not even if it is about facts that are scientifically proven. Believe me. I speak from experience.
I guess there is hardly a topic you can write about without hurting people’s feelings or challenging their beliefs. You simply have to get used to some negative comments. The positive ones will still outweigh the negative ones if you write good content.
- Some fat people will feel offended if you write that being overweight is unhealthy.
- Some people with a victim mentality will get salty when you write that you can achieve many great things once you take responsibility for your own life.
- Some heavy drinkers will hate when you write about the negative effects of alcohol.
- Some dissatisfied and envious people will attack you when you tell them about your achievements.
Remember one thing: Hate rarely comes from above. No one is jealous of a loser.
Most of your Stories will flop. That’s okay.
Not all your articles will be a success. On the contrary. Most of them will even flop. I would say that 80% of my articles have brought in less than $10. Still, my average income per story is over $40. That’s because some stories have gone viral and earned several hundred dollars.
The Pareto principle sends its regards.
The Pareto principle, named after Vilfredo Pareto (1848–1923), also called the Pareto effect or the 80-to-20 rule, states that 80% of the results are achieved with 20% of the total effort. The remaining 20% of the results require the quantitatively most work with 80% of the total effort. — Wikipedia
Consistency is everything.
Being consistent can take you a long way.
After I started posting about 2 stories a day on average, my views, reads, and earnings exploded. On the other hand, a long break from writing also has a negative effect.
Admittedly, it takes a lot of discipline to find the time and energy to write every day. But it is definitely worth it.
The Medium algorithm rewards consistency.
You have to write for the reader
f your goal is to make money, you need to write for the reader. Probably your favorite topic is not necessarily the one that brings the most reads. You can, for example, try several topics and then focus more on the ones that give the best results. This way, you not only optimize your earnings but also learn more about new topics that you haven’t dealt with before.
I have found that the big topics that play a big role in everyone’s life are especially promising: health, wealth, and relationships.
Your headline is the most important part of your story
Excessive clickbait usually backfires. I can only advise against it. Still, you need to find an exciting headline that the reader can’t help but click on. If you scroll through Medium you will always see several stories.
So you are always competing with other stories for the reader’s attention. Which story he chooses depends on one factor alone: the headline.
