Transgender YouTubes and Movies That Always Make Me Feel Good

My personally curated recommendations

Being transgender is a constant battle against yourself and the world around you. It seems like you are always under attack. It is so easy to find the haters everywhere — on TV, in movies, the internet, global news media, religious sermons, and political speeches. There are times that I feel desperate for something that will just make me feel like I am not alone with all of this hate.

When I saw Jim post this Prism & Pen writer’s prompt, I realized I was not alone in this ugly transphobic jungle and that others needed to feel good too. I decided to share a very short list of movies and YouTubes that I hope make others smile as much as I do every time I watch these these stories. They help keep me sane!

Enjoy.

Girl

I always wanted to be a ballerina and it brings me joy to know this transgender girl got her chance and that this is actually a true story.

Just Charlie

I tear up watching what Charlie goes through for acceptance and I love that she finally gets it from family and friends. I cry every time I watch the last scene.

Corey Maison: beautiful girl

I saw this years ago. It both broke my heart and healed it all in the same YouTube episode. Her facial expression changes are amazing.

Advice From A Transgender Teen And Her Mom On How To Support A Transgender Child

I wish I had a Mom like her and I am proud of the poise that Lilly had and the way she handled an emotionally charged subject.

Liberal Redneck — Why the Obsession with Trans People?

I don’t know why he makes me feel good. Maybe because I have an instinctive fear of the hate that I feel from rednecks regarding the LGBTQ community, he breaks the mold and makes me think outside my hate box.

That’s it, a very short list. I rewatch them when I feel the transgender blues coming on and they help.

I hope these put a smile on your face!

Thank you for reading my work. Please also read:

My writing has three specific goals:

1. Writing is my therapy. I have a very limited outlet for my thoughts so I write to find a way to process the most profound experience in my life. I need to understand and I need to accept myself to move forward.

2. Being transgender, for me, is a very lonely existence and if I can share some of the things that I feel and think as I go through the process of transitioning with others who are transgender and, in some way, lessen their pain and sense of loneliness, then all of this public exposure of my personal thoughts is not a waste.

3. I write to help cisgender people understand that all trans people want is to be simply understood, accepted, and treated as a normal person.

We are.
