Holy shit y’all.

Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, this adaptation “focuses on a reclusive Nina Jekyll (Eddie Izzard) finding friendship with her newly hired help, Rob, played by rising star Scott Chambers, who must work together to prevent Hyde from destroying her life” (offsite Collider).

Top billing goes to Eddie Izzard, the legendary transgender stand-up comedian, actor, and activist.

I’ve been a fan of Eddie since she exploded onto the stand-up comedy scene decades ago with comedy specials like Live at the Ambassadors, Definite Article, Glorious, Dress to Kill, Circle, Stripped, and Force Majeure.

She has since then come out not just as liking women’s clothing but as being trans too. Back when she still considered herself “a male lesbian,” she declared her right to wear whatever clothing matched her identity.

“I don’t call it drag; I don’t even call it cross-dressing. It’s just wearing a dress. It’s not about artifice. It’s about me just expressing myself.” — Eddie in a talk with Interview magazine (offsite)

When she later came out as trans, she spoke with London Real about the intense reactions she experienced once coming out not just as a transvestite, but as a woman who has faced unspeakable obstacles to her very existence. But you know what they say about stand-up comedians? They give voice to what we otherwise would never say.

Eddie’s stand-up comedy represents some of the most intelligent and insightful improvised journeys through history, culture, and identity since Robin Williams. And if you love Star Wars? You have GOT to see this video about Darth Vader visiting the same cafeteria on the Death Star as everyone else.

If Eddie Izzard seems absurdly familiar, it’s because you’ve probably seen her in one of her many, many, many film and TV roles. Her filmography includes the movie Ocean’s 12, Ocean’s 13, and Valkryie, as well as the dynamite TV shows The Riches, United States of Tara, and Hannibal (yes, the one with Mads Mikkelsen).

Holy shit…what? Yep. She’s the only reason Danny Ocean and the bunch got away with any of it in Ocean’s 12 and 13. She could have single-handedly stopped Hitler in Valkyrie if not for Tom Cruise. And while it’s disturbing as all hell, Eddie’s never looked better than when Hannibal put all of her pieces on display (uhhh…).

She’s more versatile than Gary Oldman.

She even appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience (offsite YouTube)! How ballsy is that?!

From the article on Collider, Izzard previously stated that she was “very excited to be playing the role of Nina Jekyll in this new feature film, and it’s wonderful to be able to re-imagine this classic story in a modern way.” Stephenson added to that, praising Izzard, “with her being the extraordinary and versatile actress she is, playing against Scott’s natural talent to make us believe in the good in people, I can’t wait to bring this suspenseful take on the iconic classic to life.”

Hammer Studios previously made The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll in 1960 and Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde in 1971. Let’s see what they can do when a legend like Eddie steps in front of their lens.
