Transform Your Life With A Personal Mission Statement

While corporations and organisations have mission statements, many people don’t.

That’s a problem.

A good personal mission statement will help you develop a clear focus on your biggest and most important goal. And if you use it as part of your goal setting process, you’ll gain something vital.

You’ll gain real clarity.

Clarity allows you to put your energy and resources into the stuff that matters. The stuff that changes your life. It also means that you won’t waste time on stuff that will get you nowhere.

Here’s how to create a personal mission statement

Firstly, you need to work out what your unique strengths are. These strengths will most likely lead to you realising what you would most like to do with your life.

Then think about what success means to you. Go over your past and all of the things you have achieved. Find those achievements and accomplishments that made you feel that you had ‘succeeded’. Success is what we are looking for. You know when you feel successful. Pick out those times when that feeling was there.

Clarify your personal goals. Think about the things you want to achieve in life and then narrow it down to the set of goals you want to accomplish.

Pull everything together. Combine your knowledge of your strengths, what success means to you and your goals, and then choose the one goal that means the most to you.

Express the goal as clearly and as fully as possible. Keep editing this expression. At some point, when you’ve done all you can to it, you will have your own personal mission statement.

Some examples of personal mission statements

Here are some examples of personal mission statements, with handy gaps for you to fill in an personalise them.

“To… [what you want to achieve, do or become] … so that … [reasons why it is important]. I will do this by … [specific behaviors or actions you will use to get there]”

“To live each day with … [choose 1–3 values or principles] … so that … [what living by these values will give you]. I will do this by [specific behaviors you will use to live by these values]”

“To appreciate and enjoy … [things you want to appreciate and enjoy more] … by … [what you can to appreciate and enjoy these things on a daily basis]”

How to use it

To get the absolute optimal use out of a personal mission statement, you need to make sure it is with you at all times.

The beauty of mobile phones is that we can store information on our person. When things get challenging, if you’re able to pull out your phone and check your personal mission statement, it will give you that recalibration, that focus, that will get you back on track.

You can also display the personal mission statement on your fridge, or leave a copy of it in your car.

This small bit of work, creating a mission statement and then making sure you refer to it regularly, will help push you along to a life you won’t even recognise anymore.

If this helped you, that’s great. That’s why I create this stuff. Please subscribe to receive every single one of my stories.
