How To Supercharge Your Future With Goal Setting
You ever just said f##k it?
You ever just taken a walk on the wild side? Had a lost weekend? Got in the car and seen where the road takes you?
It’s cool, right?
It is for a while anyway. Then the hangover comes. The guilt surfaces. The chaos materialises and terrifies you.
The truth is, we all need direction.
I’ve been looking into goal setting recently, specifically personal goals that help get us to where we want to be in life.
I really want to know how they work.
Why set goals?
Anyone who has achieved anything in life, from athletes to successful business people to great parents, they all have some form of goal they have been aiming for.
Goals allow you to think long-term. Really powerful goals can fill you with a sense of purpose and provide a clear vision of how you want your life to be. They also help you manage your time and resources better.
Okay, that’s enough new age babbling.
The simple truth is, goals help you get things done.
Big things. Things that matter.
Goals that are achieved also make you feel confident. You get that nice warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
Beginning the goals journey
Your first job is to dream. Set the big picture goals that are life changing. If you could have anything you want, be with anyone you want, be anywhere you want, what would it look like?
Essentially, this first part of the process involves you working out what you want your life to be like in ten years, and then identifying the big goals that will ensure that vision comes true.
Then, you break down those big goals into smaller targets. These targets are the actions and outcomes that will help you get closer to achieveing your goals.
Finally, you then start the work. Because you have broken those goals down into manageable targets, you can start seeing results almost immediately.
To put it another way, we:
Think about how we want our life to be in ten years.
Work out the goals that are attached to that.
Set targets we have to reach.
Work towards those targets.
Experienced goal setters break the targets down from years, to months, to weeks and even to days. They design their daily life around their ten year goals.
Doesn’t that sound exciting? Imagine living your life with that sense of purpose.
I’m going to be spending a lot more time on goals in the coming days. I really want to develop an understanding of how to set real, useful goals that can help me design my life, rather than just let life happen to me.
In other words, less f##k it, more go for it.
