Train Your Bladder to Sleep Through the Night

Waking up at the same time every night to pee? You don’t have to do that any more.

People of all ages report to me that they wake up one or more times during the night because they have to pee. It’s often the same time each night.

For years it was happening to me too, until a good friend made a passing comment.

She told me, “You know, you can train your bladder not to do that”, and I’ve been telling people that ever since.

“You know, you can train your bladder not to do that.”

Ask Google how you can stop waking up to pee, and you’ll find plenty of articles with the same advice.

  1. Limit liquids after dinner.
  2. Decrease caffeine and alcohol consumption.
  3. Empty your bladder before going to bed.

Yes, do those things, but there’s one very important step that all those articles skip.

Tell your bladder it’s not time to get up. When it wakes you up to pee, tell it “No, it’s not time to pee right now”.

Tell your bladder it’s not time to get up.

When you get up to pee at night, it’s not usually because your bladder is so full you simply can’t hold it any longer. It’s usually because the bladder is giving you that pesky sensation that you need to pee.

You unintentionally created a habit and hard wired it into your sleep schedule.

In the past, when your bladder woke you, you got up. You don’t want to wet the bed, and it’s hard to sleep when your bladder is talking to you. So, you got up. Then you did it again the next night, and the night after that, and the night after that. Bam, just like that you unintentionally created a habit and hard wired it into your sleep schedule.

Bam, just like that you unintentionally created a habit and hard wired it into your sleep schedule.

Here’s what to do instead. When that feeling wakes you up, tell your bladder it’s not time to pee right now and try to fall back to sleep.

Be patient with the process.

The first time you try it, you may only be able to lay in bed another 15–30 minutes, but stick with your new habit.

Within a few days, you’ll be able to sleep longer without getting up. Your bladder will begin to wake you less often or even not at all.

Before long, you’ll blissfully wake up at your normal time in the morning and smile because you didn’t get up during the night.

It sounds too simple to be so effective, but your most powerful medicine is your mind. Use it to train your bladder to sleep through the night.
