In Case You Missed It — 2022

TOP NINE Stories related to Vulnerability, Mindfulness, and Reflection — 2022

Writing is my therapy and catharsis. Thank you, readers, for helping me through that.

I’m a music professor and conductor of choirs. I’m one of those strange birds that, nearly forty years into the game, still feels passionate about my work. It’s a mixed blessing if I’m being honest. It’s difficult to truly disconnect and breathe when your livelihood is inextricably linked to your passion.

Thankfully, I’m also passionate about travel, and as perhaps you have surmised, naturism. Perhaps it’s not surprising that I have found these worlds colliding on nearly a daily basis, as each is centered on the human exploration toward self-realization.

Below is a collection of essays I’ve authored over the past year that coalesces and weaves these ideals into a single stream of consciousness. Sometimes the nudity is metaphorical; other times it requires the removal of clothing. But always, it requires one’s willingness to look in the mirror and ask hard questions about the meaning of words like love, happiness, and contentment.

STORIES ABOUT VULNERABILITY, MINDFULNESS, AND REFLECTION

This first story is pinned to the top of my profile page. I wrote it after working with a young conductor as she was trying to find the calm, quiet voice that would create a sense of trust and intimacy with the singers in the choir. On the way home that day, I got to thinking about the formative experiences we had at Harbin Hot Springs in California — floating, naked, in a state of peacefulness.

I wrote this post at the invitation of a friend who had just started a new publication called Life Through a Lens. My wife and I had recently gone out to dinner with friends where we ended up in a lengthy discussion about woke culture and the perils of navigating life in a world fixated on micro-aggressions. I’m of two minds on such matters. You can hear me arguing with myself in this piece.

It’s terribly unpopular in 2022 to whine or complain about being a middle-aged white guy, especially if you’re in a position of privilege or power, as I most certainly am. Funny, that’s not where I came from — it’s just sort of where I ended up. And sometimes, I honestly don’t know what to do about it.

I’ve found a lovely home here on MEDIUM. This story takes a moment to celebrate the joy of writing, and how much can be a meditative experience on a chilly morning near the fireplace.

I’ve never been a big fan of extended family gatherings. I find it easy to get lost in the crowd, if not downright overwhelmed. It’s a dichotomy, really — the desire to be surrounded by the ones you love, while craving the intimacy of quiet conversation and meaningful connections. You can struggle through that with me below.

The French understand life balance better than anyone I know. As someone recently said, they work to live instead of the other way around. My daughter and I had a long discussion about such sensibilities in the context of the current trend of quiet quitting. Here’s how that went.

Performative Activism! That! I find the noise on social media — along with other performative gestures — deafening amidst a world that’s literally bursting into flames. I seek to live a life that encourages those around me to live fully and love genuinely. But perhaps I’m deluding myself and I’m simply being… performative. I hope not.

This was one of my earlier stories that sought to explain the synergy and catharsis I find in both writings as well as the practice of naturism. In the right context, each can be a vehicle for baring one’s soul.

And this brings us pretty much full circle from the lead-out story that remains pinned to my profile. Same story, but an earlier version where I was still teasing out my voice on this platform. It was also my first story published on Be Yourself — a publication focused on living life to its fullest.

So there it is. My innermost thoughts about my innermost thoughts. Thanks for allowing me the time and space to find catharsis with you in cyberspace.

Enjoy this story? Please take a moment to clap! You can clap up to 50 times, and each time you do that, it helps move naturist stories up the queue in the MEDIUM algorithm.
