To All the Writers Following Me Without Reading My Articles
I feel you.

Social media is hard, and being a writer on a platform like Medium is even harder. I understand you’re following me because you’re hoping I will follow back and read your stories.
I can relate.
To be clear, I won’t follow you back. But I will share three ways of finding followers and readers, depending on what you’re trying to achieve.
You need 100 followers to join the partner program and earn from your writing.
The 100 followers requirement is pretty stupid (IMO), and I explained why here. That said, since it exists, you don’t have a choice if you want to monetize your stories on Medium.
If you’re following me and other random writers to reach 100 followers, stop wasting your time and target newbies like you.
I recommend the following tags to find stories and like-minded newcomers: 100 followers, 100 followers on Medium, and 100 followers challenge.
(There are more.)
People looking for 100 followers themselves are MUCH more likely to follow back.
As the experts say, “Find a follow train near you and jump on board.”
If you’re following me because you’re a writer hoping I will read your stories.
If you’re trying to get views on your stories, I recommend joining one of the many Medium communities.
For example, The Kraken Lore and Tantalizing Tales are good places to go for fiction because the editing teams and many of the readers there are amazingly supportive. They will happily read your (short) fiction stories, and you’ll find great pieces to read yourself.
If you’re more into non-fiction, I recommend creating your publication about this niche you’re interested in. People will find you, and you will get to build your community of like-minded writers and readers, which is a great feeling. If you’re more of a generalist, check out Brain Labs before you start your pub; it’s a new non-fiction place that might answer your needs. Mind Without Borders is another cool one.
Another possibility, of course, is to read a few of my stories. If you clap and/or comment on several of my stories, there’s a good chance I will check out your profile.
If you’re following me because you read from a social media marketing guru that it’s the way to make $$$ on Medium.
That’s not my jam, and you likely won’t succeed, but everyone is free to try.
If that’s your plan, however, be prepared to work HARD.
VERY HARD.
You can’t just follow a few writers a day and write a story a week. That won’t bring you more than a few cents.
If you go the social media marketing way, you GO ALL IN.
Jason Provencio is the example to follow.
Jason works very hard on developing his Medium empire. As far as I can tell, every day he:
- writes two to three blogs that are well-written, interesting, and with a catchy titles,
- edits and publishes many stories for his publication Bouncin’ and Behavin’,
- follows 120 new writers per day (that’s Medium’s daily limit),
- and reads and comments on even more stories.
Jason has been a Medium member since December 2021, follows 54,000 writers, has published maybe 1,000+ blogs, created, developed, and promoted a successful publication (3k+ followers), and has a second account where he writes about Medium.
That’s the mindset and entrepreneurship you need to succeed in following this path.
Conclusion
- If you need 100 followers => birds of the same feather flock together. Follow other newbies; they will happily follow you back.
- If you want other writers to read your stuff, read theirs.
- If you want to make money on Medium, be prepared to work VERY HARD like Jason.
