ARC OF THE IMMORTALS Book 2

Time Rifts: 9 / Final Excursions [part 1]

Recap: On an excursion Jac’s Hivbrit identifies Hannah by name. Jac recognizes Hannah as his Spirit Mother. Jac admits to Touzdae about losing consciousness. They get drunk on Etweeny.

Recap continued: Jac says he will meditate on his impulsive behaviors.

Touzdae travels to a farther future where she sees an accidental death. Wracked with tears she collapses in on herself.

Jac sees a dark mark deep inside Touzdae. Hivbrit advises against removing it, lest Touzdae be a target.

Continuing where we left off:

Hivbrit: Removal of the dark mark causes capture. Better that she passes through twelve interdimensional membranes.

Jac (with thoughts and streams of thought): Is it important to know who it came from? Can you tell me where and when the dark mark came from? Where are the twelve interdimensional membranes? And…Is it advisable to inform Touzdae of this?

Hivbrit: Not advisable to inform Touzdae. You must keep your word. Both of your timespace trajectories will lead you… Lead you to pass through the twelve interdimensional membranes. Passing through the membranes is contingent upon your word or debt.

The dark mark originated from Earth — Planet Terra. From a far future. Who? You are not ready to know the source without a context. Context not ready for you.

Jac: Touzdae already went to the far distant future as if she knew on an intrinsic level.

Jac realized that he stated the obvious since Hivbrit did not respond.

Touzdae returned from her long excursion and went straight to bed and glorious sleep. She awoke briefly as Jac joined her.

Touzdae awoke with a start.

The emergency bells were sounding “Full Alert”

Jac was gone. She ran down the corridor into the conference area. By instinct down into the airlock areas. It was open. The inner door jammed open. The O-2 scrubbers had stopped. Jac was poised to open the outer doors. Touzdae grabbed him as he depressed the switch and blew the doors. She pulled him back through the jammed doors and passed the emergency blast door as it closed. The outer areas of the number two airlock depressurized into the time rift corridor of space.

She checked herself and then turned Jac over and looked into his eyes. She saw the whites of his eyes. He was docile and disassociated.

He stood looking down at his body next to Touzdae. He tried to reach her but the phase variance was off. She couldn’t see him or hear him.

“Why am I here?” he asked aloud.

The station shuddered under his feet. He walked up the ramp into the foyer through the closed hatch as if it wasn’t there.

A deafening sound of lightning sizzling and a barrage of thunder thrust like a sword piercing the flesh of the station. And the station tore in half. He saw the pathway through the middle of the structure. The path beckoned him. He saw a great structure with turrets and towers. He felt an irresistible urge to descend through the chasm. Go to the castle, a voice said in his head. As he sprinted toward the castle his spirit was yanked backward into his body.

He awakened and projectile vomited all over Touzdae.

Hours later he awakened in a bunk in the crew’s quarters strapped-in to a lower bunk and in a forcefield restraint. After a time Touzdae appeared.

Jac: I know what happened to the Entu Monk.

Touzdae: He went insane as you are doing apparently…

She was restraining her hot temper.

Jac (ignoring her mood): I took advantage of an envelope in time.

Touzdae: I don’t think it’s wise for you to take any more trips with the amount of time we have left here. Fifteen day-cycles, Jac! A little less than fifteen day-cycles left.

Jac: Since I have seen a time envelope I need not go into it. I don’t have the answers I need. [paused heavy breathing] I need to go back in.

Touzdae: I can’t let you do that. I need to keep you, keep us safe. Look at this, what you’ve done.

A miniature holo-vid displayed the scene. The outer doors of an airlock: jettisoned by explosive bolts. She skipped backward, froze, enlarged, and enhanced the image. It was Jac standing by the airlock controls. Touzdae entered and pulled him out as the explosion began.

Touzdae: What you did should have been impossible.

Jac (via thought): I saw an opportunity and I took it. My body did what it wanted without me.

Touzdae (aloud): That’s no explanation. I’m keeping you here.

She leaned over and kissed him pricking his neck with a needle.

Jac (outraged): Ouch, what was that?

Within a minute he collapsed into unconsciousness.

She left the room. She left the portable holo-player on standby.

Thirty minutes later she was in her Hopper. Both her first and second hoppers slipped into the time streams.

He blinked his eyes and the holo-player sprang into play:

“Jac,” it was Touzdae. “I have to leave you for a short time. I will return in five to seven hours from now.”

“No…” he bellowed at the top of his lungs.

He slowed his breathing and within twenty minutes he was free of the restraints. He moved with caution to the conference area and then to the controls. He was careful not to let his spirit slip from his body. He looked for and found two lockouts on his Hopper and removed them.

He filed a one-hour flight plan and went to his Hopper. He launched.

Jac’s time bubble started to separate. He pulled it closer and sealed the leak before it ruptured. He gathered more electromagnetic energy around his time bubble. It caught the arc and began traveling back. He closed his eyes and opened his 3rd Eye.

“You are thinking in a linear fashion of cause and effect,” she said. It was Hannah. “Have you forgotten your teachings about time and space?

“You can open your eyes now…”

He opened them. The time bubble, the stream, and the scene surprised him. It was different.

“You were expecting the same. Let go of your expectations. It looks different. It is the same with tighter parameters.”

“Give me a moment, please,” Jac said in a small quiet voice.

She laughed in a light lilting melody to assist him in loosening his dense thinking.

He looked at the space. It was the inside of an enormous metallic sphere. It seemed familiar.

“Pulling the bubble closer sealed the leak. The action prevented an aberrant timeline from developing. The parameters of your choices have less variability.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but somehow I do.”

Their two time-bubbles floated within the metal sphere.

“Do you need to satisfy your curiosity? Or…?” she asked.

“I don’t know what you mean,” Jac said confused.

The larger bubble contained her. In a smaller bubble, Jac intersected the structures at the center of the sphere. Jac’s bubble passed through the device where Hannah was sitting and their eyes met for an instant.

Jac’s bubble popped out of the time stream and into the Hopper. The hopper and the second hopper went back, as programmed, into the landing bay.

The internal chronometer read 13 days, 20 hours, 17 minutes, and 1 second.
