Summary

The poem "Time for Change" by Rajesh Vairapandian reflects on the casual use of profanity in society and its impact on the younger generation.

Abstract

"Time for Change" is a thought-provoking poem that addresses the prevalence of profanity in everyday language and its effects on children. It depicts a scenario where young children are exposed to and inquire about swear words, highlighting the parents' lack of attention to their children's curiosity due to their own use of profanity. The poem questions the responsibility of adults in choosing appropriate language around children and suggests that the words we use have significant power. It warns that the normalization of profanity could lead to a decline in decency and negatively shape the values of the next generation.

Opinions

  • The poet believes that the frequent use of profanity has become too casual and is a cause for concern.
  • There is a sentiment that adults are not taking enough responsibility for the language they use in front of children.
  • The poem conveys that words, especially those considered profane, hold power and can have a lasting impact on the development of children.
  • It criticizes the notion held by some that words have no power and that being vulgar is acceptable.
  • The poet implies that the current generation may be inadvertently passing on negative linguistic habits to the next generation through their casual use of profanity.
  • The poem suggests that there is a shrinking sense of decency in society, which is partly due to the normalization of profanity.

Four-year-old sister asking the acronym for WTF to her seven-year-old brother;

He thinks for a minute then replied, “I don't know but we use FO at school”

They both watching a cartoon together; A mother pig says BS to her husband pig.

They want to know the acronym for BS.

Brother tried to ask his dad, who just dropped a F-Bomb on his phone call, dint have time to listen to his son.

He tries his luck with mom, who is busy sending a middle finger emoji to her in-laws.

We are the bridge between our generation and the next What are we transferring through the bridge? F-Bombs and SOBs? AHs and FOs?

Kids grow up watching us. Are we responsible? Are we choosing the right words in front of kids?

Profanity became casual Decency is shrinking Some feel dark is better Some feel words have no power; In reality, Every spoken word has a power in it.

By uttering a bad word we are not ruining a person or situation we are ruining a new generation.
