Summary

"Gods on the Queue" is a poem about a child who, lacking parental affection, dreams of gods waiting for her hugs, yet she remains attached to her teddy bear, symbolizing her need for comfort and security.

Abstract

The poem "Gods on the Queue" by Rajesh Vairapandian, published in 2019, depicts a poignant scene where a young girl, neglected by her parents, finds solace in her dreams. In her slumber, gods line up, yearning for the affection she has to offer. However, the girl's loyalty lies with her teddy bear, which represents the only source of comfort and love she knows. The gods, despite their divine nature, are unable to fulfill her need for a parent's warmth, a role her teddy bear fills in the absence of her parents. The poem captures the essence of a child's emotional resilience and the profound impact of physical affection on a child's psyche.

Opinions

  • The poem suggests that the emotional needs of children are profound and cannot be easily replaced, not even by divine beings.
  • It implies that physical affection, such as a goodnight hug from parents, is crucial to a child's emotional development.
  • The author conveys a sense of innocence and the inventiveness of a child's mind in seeking comfort in the absence of parental love.
  • The imagery of gods waiting in line for the child's affection symbolizes the high value of genuine human connection and love.
  • The poem may also reflect on the loneliness and longing that can exist even in the presence of imaginary or divine companionship.

A Poem

Her mom and dad does not give her a goodnight hug She hugged her teddy and slept off; Gods appeared in her dream waiting in the queue to get a hug from her. She gave them a sleep-smile for a second then, hugged her teddy tightly; Gods don't know the way to become a teddy melted down to her feet.
