Summary

The poem "Through to Beyond" by Natalie Frank reflects on overcoming adversity and finding strength in the face of a metaphorical perfect storm, ultimately transcending hate and pain to discover peace and beauty.

Abstract

The poem "Through to Beyond" presents a metaphorical journey through a tumultuous life event likened to a perfect storm. The author describes the initial struggle against the destructive forces of hate and the futility of fighting against overwhelming odds. The narrative then shifts to embracing the rain, symbolizing acceptance and resilience, leading to a transformative experience. As the storm passes, the speaker finds solace in the beauty of nature, signifying a personal rebirth and the insignificance of past adversaries. The poem concludes with the realization that moving beyond the storm brings tranquility and a new perspective, free from the weight of hateful individuals who once seemed dominant.

Opinions

  • Acceptance is portrayed as a key to survival and growth, with the rain symbolizing the challenges that must be endured rather than fought against.
  • The poem suggests that enduring hardships can lead to a profound appreciation of life's beauty, as seen in the description of the sunset, moonrise, and stars.
  • There is a clear message that those who thrive on hate will eventually lose their power and relevance.
  • The transformation of the speaker from being under the control of hateful individuals to finding peace and independence is a central theme of the poem.
  • The author implies that personal triumph is not about outlasting the hate but about moving forward and leaving it behind, which leads to personal growth and renewal.

I was once told My life is the perfect storm But the perfect storm Is perfect only in its destruction And the hate the people use To cheer it on Surfing the waves and chasing the risk Fighting the undertow will only tire you Then suck you under When the fight goes out Drowning you beneath the polished boards On which the hateful tribe stands The only way to get out from under Is to welcome the rain Understanding that it allows the waters to grow endlessly Until their vastness is all that can be seen It is not by waiting until you are beaten down Until the fight fizzles with the rest of you That you will win But by moving on Through the rain until you have left it far behind Then though it feels like days end You will find the glory of another sunset And moonrise The gentle wind coaxing a smile From the blankness that pain let settle And as stars twinkle in the heavens like jewels Those who ruled with hate Will come to rest on the seafloor lifeless You no longer below them To hold their weight above the surface And keep them anchored to shore
