New Writer Focus Compilation
This Week’s Original, Quirky, Funny and Heartwarming Stories from New Illumination Writers!
The weekly roundup of awesome new writers’ stories

At the beginning of June, I began to use Dr Mehmet Yildiz‘s list of new writers to pull articles that appealed to me and highlighting a few of them each day. My goal was to get a little more exposure for writers that are new to Illumination for sure, and many are new to Medium as well.
I am going to (at least temporarily) end my New Writer Spotlight in July, and instead feature some writing prompts and challenges. All readers and writers, new and old are invited to participate! But for today, please take a look at the week’s roundup of great writing.
My bias for selecting articles oriented around writers that had less than 200 followers, and I wanted to stay away for exceptionally polarizing topics and those topics that are found in abundance all over Medium.
So, I tend for the eclectic, and anything that is new or informative to me. Plus, as many know, anything about animals tends to catch my eye, as well as a quirky story with an upbeat narrative.
Here is the last week’s list of articles that jumped off the page at me and begged for some additional attention:
June 24 — Today we walked the walk with a story about the benefits of taking to foot to getting around. Plus, we played some language games, celebrated our imperfections and learned some appetizing new words to describe food that are just as dulcet as can be:
June 25 — Today was notable because we had an unanticipated ghost writer that coached us in the best way to make sure our cat is clean. We also learned how to choose stocks with scrabble tiles and learned about the power of gratitude. For a pawsitively good read, check this out:
June 26 — Today we had a cruise ship poem — remember when people used to go on cruises? Plus, we strapped on our new Zappos shoes, learned about TERF’s and headed off to the Big Easy for some great stories:
June 27 — Saturday is a good time to head out to the country and see what sort of investment advice Warren Buffet may have to offer. We also got a bit absurd and learned a lesson that only could be taught by the bamboo tree. A bunch of good information and learning awaits here:
June 28– I don’t know why, but Charles Bukowski seems to be coming up a lot lately. He did Sunday as well when we explored his mantra, “Don’t try.” Seems a little dispiriting until you really examine what he means. Plus, we flew whales around on planes, learned about the “magic click”, and saw some cool artwork in one author’s stories:
June 29 — Monday is a great day to cast your cares aside; and maybe your clothing as well! We hit the thrift stores to see what all the millennials are fussing about and jump right straight off a cliff. Come take the plunge and read these awesome writers’ work:
June 30 — And finally it is time to wrap up the New Writer Spotlight feature for June. I think it went really well, and I loved reading and telling you about the spectacular writing being done by writers just recently added to the publication.
I may go back to this format in later months, but for now it is time to do something else, which I will certainly come back and link to it here retroactively, just as soon as I write it! I plan to keep up version of the writing prompts and challenges for July, so stay tuned!
Meanwhile, here is our last New Writer Spotlight section for June (I will have one more article on July 1 to make a nice round 30, because I started a day late, but it will be a shorter, stand-alone version).
One thing I have learned from doing these segments, is that I only need to say one word to get people to read the feature. And guess what? This one has it:
CATS!!!
And there you go. That is the rundown for the last week of June and the last of the New Writer Spotlight. For now…
Hopefully curating all these together in one place will make for easier reading for anyone that missed a day or two! It has been really fun getting to know all the great new writers and taking a peek into their writing portfolios. There is some really good stuff out there!
