There is one feature that makes you very sexy. According to scientific findings, especially if you are a man.

The good thing is that it’s not a superficial characteristic like looks or the thickness of your wallet. That these things play a role in your attractiveness should not be a secret.

I’m talking about humor.

We all love spending time with people who have a great sense of humor.

As a study has shown, humor is a sign of intelligence and also seems to be a real advantage when it comes to dating game.

The Study

As part of the study, the 400 participants (200 men and 200 women) had to write funny captions for a cartoon, which were evaluated. A strong correlation between humor and intelligence was found, which in turn increases attractiveness. Men were on average more humorous than women.

The abstract of the study states:

Structural equation models showed that general and verbal intelligence both predict humor production ability, which in turn predicts mating success, such as lifetime number of sexual partners. Also, males showed higher average humor production ability.

What Exactly Makes Humor So Sexy?

Almost all the qualities we find attractive in other people can be explained quite logically from an evolutionary point of view. Beauty ideals are usually also signals of health and good genes, or in the case of women, fertility. This is why we evolved to find them attractive.

The fact that women tend to find men with higher incomes attractive can be explained by the fact that, especially in past times, women needed a capable provider at their side to maximize the chances of survival of their offspring.

These two preferences are therefore evolved because they increase the chances of achieving the biological goal that guides our drives: having healthy offspring.

In the case of the preference for humor, however, the reasons are not so obvious. Do we just want to have a good time or is there more to it?

Theory Of Mental Fitness Indicators

Sexual selection could provide an answer to the question. More precisely, the theory of mental fitness indicators, which assumes that

some human capacities such as language, creativity, art, music, altruism, and humor evolved at least partly through mutual mate choice for ‘good genes’ and ‘good parent’ traits

As the researchers wrote in the publication of the study mentioned above.

According to this theory, humor could be so sexy because it is a difficult-to-fake sign of intelligence.

The intelligence displayed through humor is sexy, according to the paper, because of the following evolutionary reasons:

Intelligence has been much better studied than humor as a mental fitness indicator: general intelligence is one of the most sexually desirable traits for both sexes (Buss, 1989), is highly heritable (Plomin & Spinath, 2004), and is correlated with many fitness-related traits such as physical health and longevity (Gottfredson & Deary, 2004), body symmetry (Banks, Batchelor, & McDaniel, 2010), physical attractiveness (Langlois et al., 2000) and semen quality (Arden, Gottfredson,Miller, & Pierce, 2008).
