This technical question is asked in almost all my recent Data Science interviews…

I started the job hunting again…

I moved to Toronto earlier this year. I was excited to start my new life in this vibrant city. However, I quickly realized that finding a Data Science job would not be easy. The economy was slow, and there were many other new immigrants competing for the same positions. In fact, my journey was so challenging that it prompted me to write an article about my first data science job, as I found myself in a similar or even more challenging situation after moving to Toronto. Without any connections, finding a job becomes difficult, and without a job, it’s challenging to establish new connections.

The question I got asked every time

Having said that, I managed to secure several interviews with a wide spectrum of companies, ranging from start-ups to established corporate giants. (highlight it if you want me to share more about my job hunting in Toronto as an immigrant!) From all the interviews I had, this single technical question was asked almost every time:

What are the potential min and max numbers of rows that can result from joining two tables, table A and table B, each containing 1000 unique rows of records, for all different SQL joining methods?

I appreciate this question as it evaluates your comprehensive understanding of various joining techniques and requires you to consider how different joining methods impact the final results. Moreover, it highlights the significance of understanding SQL, which remains a fundamental skill for everyone who wants to work in the data science field.

This question is relatively straightforward, so I’ll refrain from providing an immediate answer. Instead, I strongly encourage you to give it a try. Feel free to share your answer in the comments section!
