This Simple Formula Predicts The Success Of Your Relationship

Romantic relationships.

They play a big role in the lives of most of us. Sometimes they are beautiful, other times they are challenging and require a lot of effort. Frequently, they also fall apart.

There are countless reasons for relationships to fail.

But as it turns out, there is an amazingly simple formula that can predict the success of a love relationship quite accurately.

The Formula by Robyn Dawes

Robyn Dawes was an American psychologist who worked primarily on the topic of human judgment.

He became famous for proving that expert judgments based on experience and complex statistical algorithms do not provide better judgments than simple formulas based on a few key factors.

In a 1974 study, Dawes came up with a formula that can predict marriage stability very accurately.

The study involved 27 married couples who were asked to keep a diary of the following things over a period of 35 days:

  • Sexual intercourse
  • Arguments
  • Self-rating of happiness

Using this data, Dawes established the following formula for assessing the stability of a marriage:

Marital Happiness equals the frequency of sexual intercourse minus the frequency of arguments.

X= Sex- fights.

X>0: happy marriage

X<0: unhappy marriage.

More sex than fighting means a happy relationship. If it is the other way around, the relationship is not very healthy.
