Quality vs Quantity. Here’s How To Deal With The Question Like A Badass (And Make More $$$)

Write more articles or focus on writing better articles?

Quality over quantity?

I have read a lot about this debate here on Medium and I think I have a pretty smart scientifically proven solution that might settle this debate once and for all.

A bold claim, right?

Photography Class

Jerry Uelsmann was a photographer and professor of photography at the University of Florida.

On the first day of class, he divided his students into two groups. One half was the “quality group”, while the other half was the “quantity group”.

The quantity group was to be evaluated on the last day of the class solely on the basis of the number of works they had created. The more photos submitted, the better their grade.

The quality group, on the other hand, was judged only on its best photo. Submitting just one perfect photo at the end of the semester was enough for them to get an A.

Which group do you think produced the best images at the end of the semester?

You would think quality group. After all, that was exactly their focus: to produce the perfect picture.

But the reality was different.

The best photos actually came from the quantity group. Quantity led to quality.

James Clear explains this phenomenon like this:

“During the semester, these students were busy taking photos, experimenting with composition and lighting, testing out various methods in the darkroom, and learning from their mistakes. In the process of creating hundreds of photos, they honed their skills. Meanwhile, the quality group sat speculating about perfection.”

More is more

This experiment impressively demonstrates the power of getting your reps in.

Do you want to publish more articles? Write more. This is obvious. Do you want to publish better articles? Write more.

Doing more seems to be the universal answer.
