One of my neighbor’s Mules entering his grazing field by Richard Armstrong

This Mule Taught Me How To Fulfill My Destiny

When we are opened to being taught, even a Mule will instruct us!

Walking past the barn I heard hoof beats. Seconds later the mule past me at a full gallop out the lane. He was free, no harness to hold him. Free, free at last. He darted out the farmer’s lane towards my house. I watched the Mule run. Then, one-thousand pounds of meat and muscle abruptly stopped. It was like an invisible wall commanded him to stop. Whoa! Hold on there boy! He was to be in harness with the other Mules. The cow manure needed spreading today. But he bolted from the barn. Leaving the farmer holding an empty harness.

Why what made him stop?

He was free. The Mule was set for adventure beyond the farm.

But what was it? What brought him to a halt?

Aha, he saw the gate to the field on his right where he always grazed.

The Mule could not gallop past the familiar.

Wow! Such a great lesson he taught me.

We are unaware of the invisible wall surrounding us. Holding us tight in the ‘land of the familiar’. We’ve grown accustomed to the comfortable.

Mules and we have this one thing in common I discovered on my walk.

We like the familiar.

The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine. Mike Murdock

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power. Unknown

There is a line inscribed on the pavement of our daily walk called ‘Familiar’ Its purpose has us harnessed in our comfort space. We have grown accustomed to the ordinary. The dim light of hope lives in the normal. While the familiar is a warm comfortable place to live. It can ambush us from achieving greatness.

Solomon wrote: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” Proverbs 13: 12

Do you harbor within a longing for something more?

Is there a stirring in your gut knowing you are better than where you are now?

Do you think your dream is unattainable?

Why not dream a little?

And here is the clincher. Can you muster the courage to break from the ‘familiar’ into a land of possibility?

My neighbor's Mule could have gone where he had never been before. BUT, He stopped at the gate called, “Familiar” never to live a life beyond the farm.

One of my favorite quotes is by the English playwright, James Albery. Mr. Albery aptly describes living life in the familiar. Here it is:

“He slept beneath the moon; He basked beneath the sun, He lived a life of going-to-do; And died with nothing done.”

So how do I fulfill my destiny? I must push beyond my comfort zone.

Yes, I know it is safe inside my comfortable world. If ever I want to achieve more I must pass the gate called, “Familiar”.

What one step you could take today to fulfill God’s dream for your life?

Why not push beyond comfort into the realm of the possible?

My neighbor’s Mule still lives on the farm in the land of “Normal”.

Know this one thing God has great plans for you. You are His masterpiece.

For we [YOU] are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

I invite you to run past the gate today into God’s ordained plan for your life.

Have a great tomorrow,

Richard
