This is Us
2020 in the United States
It’s the year 2020 The quintessential idea of the future Ingrained from the visions and dreams Of the past It’s here at last
The month is October And the events up until now Reflect a vision in the mirror Of a country’s unsober Existence and resistance
To the utopian ideal Of what the future would look like Behind the closed eyelids of a dreamer Drowning in tears and fears back 102 years Gasping for the air in his fluid-filled lungs
I can’t breathe, he said
This is us
The pandemic was relentless And he’s not the only one Now with eyelids open but minds still closed A nation in pain from two diseases One from oppression, one from sneezes
Both systemic One of body, one of mentality Fast-forward into the now reality Where’s the flying cars And living in space among the stars
When 2020 is hindsight in 100 years In the closed eyed dreamer’s dreams And visions and tears Marred by history repeating Senseless bloodshed and beating
Of innocent men and women Or the horrific deaths of those Gasping for air in their fluid-filled lungs All because mitigation was too slow And wearing masks too political
We can’t breathe!
Yes, when 2020 is hindsight in 2120 And they deal with the next 100-year pandemic Will the dis-ease of evil still reign as well Or mimic the stain of the past and the distrust When history makes them think, Oh my God This is us
From the Spanish Flu to Covid-19 with civil and racial unrest as a common denominator, will the country do and be better in the next century? Will there even be a country left? Thoughts?
