This is the Best Interview You’ll Read Today

And no, I don’t just say that because I’m the one being interviewed.

This super tacky edit is by the author, obviously.

These questions were created by Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for the writers of the Medium publication The Brain is a Noodle.

[1] What did you like to do most when you were 10? They say that this hobby is likely what brings you the most joy in life — is this something you still do?

Honestly, I did the same things at 10 that I do now: writing, watching television, listening to music, and playing video games. Since I turned writing into my job, video games are probably what brings me the most joy.

Retro games have been my vibe recently. I just realized that my GameCube still works — got to love that durable old tech. I’m trying to 100% The Simpsons: Hit and Run. Wish me luck!

The only thing I don’t do as much as I used to is sing. I was a choir kid from 3rd grade to 10th grade. Then, I got accepted into a radio broadcasting and journalism class and that changed my life. But, I might hit a slight high note from a SZA track when no one’s looking.

[2] What genres do you write? Why do you choose to write with these types of structures? What’s attractive about them?

I’ve been super into flash fiction recently. I love it because I’m able to practice all aspects of writing within a short time span (brainstorming, drafting, editing, etc.)

Last year, I wrote a few books during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) events. It was fun to cross Write a Book off my to-do list. I don’t know if I’ll take those drafts past the first draft stage though.

Flash fiction has been a breath of fresh air without having to commit to one idea. I hope that I’ll one day have enough flash fiction pieces to make a collection. I also plan to pitch some literary magazines soon. Look out for me in these internet streets!

Here’s a flash fiction piece that I wrote recently:

[3] What’s your all-time favourite childhood TV show?

I can’t, for the life of me, pick just one show. The best I can do is a short-list:

Hey Arnold: I’m a sucker for a show about a normal kid. This cartoon is ridiculously funny and gets very deep for a children’s show. It’s really one of the best Nickelodeon cartoons ever.

Lizzie McGuire: Again, I love a show about a normal kid. Not every show has to be about secret pop stars and wizards. Whenever I see Hilary Duff my inner 8-year-old screams. LOVE YOU HILARY!!!

Kenan & Kel: Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are comedy legends. Also, this show was Black as HELL — from the theme song to the jokes. We love to see it. We need more children’s TV that’s unapologetically Black.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Just genius. The amount of quality content they’ve been able to spin-off of this one character is incredible. SpongeBob is going to outlive me.

[4] Pick one sense and tell us about the most relaxing thing you do in relation to that sense.

Let’s go with sound. I’ve been super into this ASMR YouTube channel called dreamy sound. There’s something about their 3D environments and nature sounds that’s so comforting. Please go check this channel out. Upgrade your nap game, sis.

[5] Who is someone you want to connect more with this month? How might you go about doing this?

I want to connect with more writers, especially writers of color. My Twitter timeline has been super lit since I followed more writers. It’s like being a part of Kids Next Door. If you’re active on Twitter, follow me and I’ll follow you back.

This or that?

Bold your choice!

  • olive oil or butter
  • e-books or physical books
  • libraries or bookstores
  • noodles or rice
  • messy desk or organized desk
