REST & YOUR HEALTH

This Is How Inadequate Sleep Almost Wrecked My Day.

The effects are so much worse than we think.

I love getting the rest I need.

I am not a nocturnal person, and I’ve never been a fan of “burning the midnight oil”.

Unless the oil really needs burning.

Here’s what happened.

It was the weekend and by 6:00 AM I was already up to do some chores and and a few other important things.

On weekends, I don’t get a lot of personal time and inasmuch as I admire it when everyone is at home, I’d still appreciate a little “me time” on a weekend.

But this particular day took a really different turn.

There were a lot of errands to run because one of my parents had a meeting to attend and my other siblings were quite busy with stuff they had to do.

As a result, the most part of my day was full of these:

“Do this. . .do that. . .go here. . .go there.”

At around 1:00 PM, it looked like I had some time to spend alone or at least get some rest. I decided to lay in the couch to get some sleep.

As I closed my eyes, I thought with a mild smirk on my face:

“Finally, I can get some sleep.”

Boy was I wrong.

I doubt a minute passed before I was called to do the next “thing”.

And you know that feeling where you are so tired in your body that it begins to show you all the signs that you need to sleep, but as soon as you try to and your sleep attempt is disrupted, the drowsiness vanishes into thin air.

Sleep oh sleep, where have you gone?

That’s how I felt. I was so upset about this but there wasn’t much I could do to control the situation.

Evening time came and I was still tired.

I looked forward to getting a good night’s sleep but once again, I was wrong. My brother had to return from work very late so I had to stay up until he got home because he’d need someone to open up the gate.

It was almost as if that was my last straw, but you know what they say when it comes to family — you’d do anything for them.

I guess after all of this my mind was at peace even when I got to find out it was almost 1:00 AM.

This time round I knew I was going to sleep for good.

Yeah. . .no, I was wrong again!

My younger brother woke me up again because his homework was not signed and I had to help him get ready for school, after which I’d have had to help my mom get ready for work.

The time was around 5 AM now so no, I had not gotten the hours of sleep prescribed by medical professionals.

I had no option but to continue with the chores for the day and I must say, I was so lethargic.

For me, my productive hours start at about 9 AM (the time I get to do my personal work stuff).

Today, I could not do a single thing after eating breakfast. I normally start writing in the morning but I could not even keep my eyes open for more than 5 minutes without a doze.

My fingers were hitting the wrong keys on the keyboard. At a point I could not even find where my laptop’s touchpad was.

That’s how bad it got. I concluded that I could not start the day like this.

It was just unacceptable.

Following this decision, I headed straight to bed to spend a good number of hours asleep. I woke up later to see a few missed calls but I don’ t regret getting the rest my body needed so badly.

I’m now up, wide awake, and writing my first article for the day.

I can’t underestimate how good I feel now.

Reflecting on this made me realize that if I tried to push myself harder(as if I could), I could have broken down and that could have costed me productivity for an entire day.

It also made me realize that we need to pay attention to how much rest we give our bodies.

Recently, I saw a funny post on Instagram that portrayed that one coworker or classmate who always claims they don’t need a lot of sleep because they rest for only about 3 to 4 hours yet are always super active and productive at school or work.

Well, if you are this type of person you may be able to pull this off for some time but it’s only a matter of time for these poor habits to catch up with you.

I can assure you that when they do, it will not be pretty.

So prioritize enough rest.

Thank you so much for reading to the end.
