Summary

The website content discusses the importance of integrity and transparency in AI-assisted writing, emphasizing the value of human intelligence (HI) in writing and the need for authors to disclose the use of AI in their work.

Abstract

The article titled "This Is All We’re Asking of AI Users: Check Out This Chap’s Integrity" underscores the significance of writers being forthright about their use of AI tools. It praises a writer on the Vocal.media platform for their honesty in disclosing AI assistance at the beginning of their article. The author of the web content argues that such transparency lends credibility to writers and is appreciated by readers. The piece also contrasts Medium's policy on AI-generated content with the practices observed on the platform, noting that despite the policy requiring disclosure of AI use

Disclosure

This was at the top of an article on another online publishing platform, Vocal.media

Wow! How refreshing is it to see this honest disclosure AT THE TOP of this fellow’s article?

Vocal, the writing site where this was published, doesn’t use claps, kisses, or thumbs up. One ♥️ is permitted. But I would have given this writer 500 ♥️ or👏 or 👍.

It was by a writer whose first language likely was not English. And guess what? I read the story.

Why? Not because it was or wasn’t AI-assisted. But because the author was up-front with his readers. And, because it was a topic I was interested in, a temple in India.

Vocal

Vocal, another writing and publishing platform, has a clearly defined, explicit policy about AI.

Though I can’t speak to whether the forum is more successful at culling AI-generated stories, I both publish and read there and can attest the articles I’ve read have felt authentic.

It has far fewer participants than Medium, and there is no ability to self-publish. Hence, every article is reviewed by an editor.

Medium

If writers still hiding behind their AI-imposed barricade stated something similar and were up-front, I would cheer them on. Give readers a choice, but be honest.

If English were not my native language, I, too, might be tempted to use tools to sound more polished. Medium writers and readers, however, are pretty forgiving. Most of us welcome language faux pas over the ugly alternative of implausibly perfect soulless “content” generated by manufactured learning/AI.

Furthermore, the use of Grammarly is expected and required by many pubs. This assists any non-English first-language users.

Medium’s policy about artificial intelligence

Believe it or not, Medium has a policy about AI.

If using it, the writer must disclose its use at the story’s beginning. What a joke. Despite having read thousands of stories and stumbled upon hundreds of AI ones, I have seen precisely two such disclosures.

This is from the Medium published guidelines.

Medium is not a place for fully AI-generated stories, and 100% AI-generated stories will not be eligible for distribution beyond the writer’s personal network.

We currently allow the responsible use of AI-assistive technology on Medium. To promote transparency, and help set reader expectations, we require that any story incorporating AI assistance be clearly labeled as such. AI-assisted text without a disclosure at the beginning of the story (within the first two paragraphs), or other AI-generated content not labeled as such (for example, AI-generated images should include captioning identifying them as such, along with proper sourcing) will similarly be restricted to distribution on the writer’s personal network.

But I shall continue to avoid reading the work of the Pretenders.

Summary

If you’re unfamiliar with the Medium HI/Human Intelligence movement, here’s the scoop.

  • In early December, a whining reader/writer** complained in a story about the amount of AI-generated pablum she was reading, identified human writers she knew were not using AI, and pleaded for others to come forward.
  • DR Rawson - The Possibilist commented on the story that he thought the idea of an “HI Movement” was a stellar idea.
  • By the end of December, the list of committed HI writers had grown to nearly 300!
  • D R Rawson is leading the HI charge. A movement is afoot. The list is expanding daily. Please comment below if you are missing from the list and want to be added.
  • The goal is to support HI writers so that thinking, sweating, and creating wordsmiths earn our few pennies per read, not those who feed ChatGPT a question and churn out drivel in a few minutes, publishing it as “their voice.”

**That whining reader/writer was me

This story has current HI-Human Intelligence writers. We hope you will support their writing. If you’re a non-AI user, please ask to be added.
