Summary

The web content discusses a movement of human writers on Medium who are committed to writing without the use of AI or ChatGPT, emphasizing the importance of human intelligence (HI) in creative writing.

Abstract

The article "Human Intelligence: Writers Continue to Shout From the Rooftops" highlights a growing community of writers, known as "HI Writers," who are dedicated to crafting their stories without relying on AI tools. This initiative, spearheaded by the author and others, aims to support and recognize the unique, soulful contributions of human authors. The piece also provides a curated list of nearly three hundred writers who have pledged to HI, suggesting ways to identify and promote non-AI content. The author encourages readers to support these writers by reading and engaging with their work, and suggests printing the list for easy access to quality, human-generated stories. The movement is part of a broader conversation about the role of AI in writing, with references to articles discussing the racist aspects of AI content and strategies for minimizing AI-generated stories in feeds.

Opinions

  • The author believes that AI is here to stay but emphasizes that the most constructive response is to avoid reading AI-generated content and to support real writers.
  • There is a strong opinion that AI-generated content lacks the unique soul and mind that human writers bring to their work.
  • The article suggests that readers can save time and read quality work by choosing to engage with content from the HI Writers list.
  • The author acknowledges the challenge of distinguishing AI content from human-generated content but asserts that readers have the choice not to engage with AI-generated material.
  • The piece expresses gratitude to the many writers and contributors who have joined the HI movement and contributed to the conversation around the impact of AI on writing and journalism.
  • The author encourages continued advocacy for human intelligence in writing and invites new writers and readers to participate in promoting the HI concept.

My apologies for tagging writers again

It is, however, the only method to alert readers about Good News! The expanding group of Human Writers — or “Human Intelligence-HI.

They are committed to not using AI or ChatGPT to write their Medium stories. (Note: this doesn’t relate to Grammarly for punctuation and grammar).

Thanks, Conceivably Me, for the conception of the “HI” moniker. She permits our adoption of it.

To those tagged

For tagged writers, please feel no obligation to engage. The article isn’t published for that reason. Consider it a “Public Service Announcement” on behalf of dedicated writers.

Please, though, note the expanded list and support “HI Writers.”

Suggestion

My plan is to print copies of the list to keep with me when out and about and at my desk.

They will serve as quick, handy access (how old school, yes, a printed page) rather than needing to refer back to this story, a computerized list, or rely upon memory.

Tossing a copy in your bag or briefcase may also assist you if awaiting an appointment, on the bus or train, or away from your computer. Highlight your favorites.

Intention

The purpose is to provide a bank of authors, who write across a broad spectrum of subjects, allowing us to: (1) save time, (2) read quality work, and (3) reward dedicated writers not using AI or ChatGPT.

Several professional, full-time writers have explained that, unfortunately, AI is here to stay. No one can serve as an enforcer or gatekeeper to mitigate its inevitable spread.

Hence, our most constructive effort is to avoid reading it and to support real writers creating from their unique souls and minds.

Expanded list

The list has been expanded over this past month. The result has been fantastic!

Nearly three hundred writers

The list was culled from comments to my articles and those of CarolF, Josh Hinton, Malky McEwan, R C Hammond, and Natalie.

Kudos to you all and numerous other writers for continuing this critical conversation.

Undoubtedly, hundreds — or even thousands — more names should be added. Please, if you’re not on the list and ought to be, leave a comment that you’re committed to HI and don’t use AI.

To minimize the annoyance of being tagged, I’ve alphabetized the names. Educators, please give me a pass if I’ve forgotten some grammar school rules…it’s been a while. 😎

Recommendations

I highly recommend these articles by Michael Koetsier and CarolF.

  1. Michael, with an impressive IT background, eloquently elucidates the racist aspect of AI-gathered content.
  2. Carol, a professional writer for several years, suggests how to minimize AI stories in our feeds and to block or mute writers.

Future efforts

I implore others to continue beating the drum by writing future articles. New writers and readers — unsuspecting fresh meat for the bots — enter the platform daily.

DR Rawson - The Possibilist has a stellar idea to promote the “HI" concept to greater lengths.

Here is his recent article. Please jump on the bandwagon to participate.

Thanks, DR, for your support and commitment to the mission.

History

If interested in the genesis of this endeavor, these were published earlier. They include links to several other writers’ superb AI pieces.

Following recommendations from seasoned journalists and Medium authors, I shall continue to shout from the rooftops. On street corners. In the occasional article.

Changes

For decades, I had the serenity prayer posted on my wall, unaware it was the AA creed:

Accept the things I cannot change, have the courage to change those I can, and have the wisdom to know the difference.

We have the choice not to read AI-generated glop. The wisdom in identifying it remains a challenge.

Happy 2024 to All!

Thanks for your time. 😎🙏Victoria
