Thirty Things in Thirty Days: One Month On

The one-month anniversary of my weird little project.

Today is the one-month anniversary of the Thing a Day. I’ve been having a lot of fun with it and have put out one daily thing for 30 days, with this being the 31st article published in my experimental publication.

(To be accurate, today is two days before the anniversary, I just write ahead, but I’ll get to that.)

I’ve had a lot of fun with this project so far, and I plan to keep going as long as I have steam and things to write about. Today, I just want to reflect on a few things that I’ve learned so far.

First off, even though this is the Thing a Day, I really like my weekends. As such, I’ve started writing articles ahead during the week so I have a bit of a buffer going into the weekend. For example, the article for Monday the 19th was written on Friday the 16th. Honestly, it helps me keep my creative juices flowing while still taking time for breaks.

Second, I’ve learned that I have at least a small audience. As of the writing of this article on July 19, my little publication has 18 followers (edit: I hit 20 on the day this came out!), and not all of them are my friends! I wasn’t sure what to expect with that, but that was more than I expected to get.

Third, I’ve learned that writing daily articles helps me keep up more with my previously-neglected Facebook author page. You can follow me there if you want — while I schedule my articles for 7 a.m. each day, I’ll post them to Facebook shortly thereafter (or whenever I wake up on the weekends, as it were). That way, you can keep up with me in more than one place! I added the link to the Thing a Day “About” page, so you can find it there, and I’ll link it again below.

Fourth, I’ve learned that sometimes, my articles go viral even though they’re not in a big-name publication. While most of the last 30 articles have had around 20–50 views, this article is currently sitting at over 3,200 views for reasons I don’t understand. If you haven’t read it, you’re welcome to go check it out.

Fifth, and possibly most importantly, I’ve learned that this is fun. Previously, I’d been in a bit of a writing funk. I was forcing myself to write in a niche, and as such, I was having trouble coming up with article topics. It just wasn’t as fun anymore. Having done the Thing a Day for a month, I’ve found that I enjoy writing more than I have in a while. Not having a set topic or niche has been great for my creativity, and I’ve just been generally happier writing my articles lately. Honestly, that was the point.

So, to everyone who is subscribed, thanks for following this weird little experiment in writing whatever I want. If you haven’t subscribed and think that you might enjoy the random stuff that I put out into the world, feel free to follow both me as an author and the Thing a Day publication. Links to do so are below.

Here’s to a month of daily Things, and thanks to everyone who has been following this nonsense. I appreciate all of your support, your claps, and your comments. Let’s go for another month!
